While we drove out of Yellowstone Nationalpark we spotted a group of 30 elk. We parked the car along side the road and observed them for a while, the young bull (male leader) was nervous for some reason and was sniffing the air constantly. Did he notice our presence? He began to drive up his herd, and suddenly we noticed what he knew all along, another bull entered his territory. Challenging him for his females. This shot was right at the moment he charged towards him. He managed to drive him away and was with his herd, that fled into the distance, not long after 🦌
I grew up far from the geographic range of elk, and didn’t see a wild elk until 2011, but from the first time I saw them in a nature documentary I was hooked. I remember at nine years old telling a boy in my class that my favourite sound in the world was the bugle of a male elk in rutting season; he looked at me like I was crazy, but I stick to my opinion. These absurdly majestic deer are an endless source of inspiration for me, and I’m really happy with how this painting turned out.
People visiting Banff generally know to be aware of bears and even wolves, but elk can be equally or more dangerous. In the fall, as rutting season gets underway, the big bulls are full of hormones, extremely protective of their ladies, and ready to fight anyone and anything. Approaching a rutting bull is a very bad idea - a full grown elk can weigh over 800 lbs, with 40 of those being his massive 1.5 meter across antlers. Definitely not someone you want to mess with! The bulls call to each other and their cows with their piercing, eerily beautiful whistle, which is what I painted this fellow doing.
Cow elk are no pushovers either. They’re easily the most dangerous animal in Banff during the spring, when they’ll protect their calves at any cost. Cow elk don’t have antlers, but they are big, fast, and have very sharp hooves. They are known to chase off grizzly bears from their calves, so not a mama you want to antagonize.
All that being said, elk are generally peaceful herbivores who like to avoid trouble, and it’s always a treat to observe a herd from a safe distance. Have you seen an elk lately?
ps. Soon you’ll be able to get this guy as a cool sticker!

This morning I was able to get out and use/evaluate the new @outdoorsmans fluid head. I was really impressed with this head for several reasons. It comes with two extra rails that allow you to either run the manfrotto style plates as well as the Arca Swiss style plates depending on your preference. I don’t know of any other fluid heads that can use both that are this solid and come in at 23 ounces (you can shave around 2 more ounces by eliminating the swivel bar attachment like I did on mine). That’s about 12 ounces less than the current head I’m using and my current head doesn’t allow the use of Arca Swiss style plates which is critical if you want to use a plate that has adjustments to find your rifles balance point when shooting off your Tripod. I’ve attached several videos showing the different uses of this tripod. Stop by their store in fountain hills or check ou the website if your interested in learning more about them. #hunting#glassing#binoculars#longrangerifles#longrangeshooting#deerhunting#elkhunting#sheephunting#muledeer#rifles#outdoorsmans#elk#muledeer#couesdeer#longrangeglassing
YOU HAVE A PROBLEM?
Pass very interesting training and that's where asked such a question that I have already the second day break over him head 🤔
What problem your product solves?
I take literally, my product is what I do-it-yourselfer, and hence the Moose!
And I can't understand what problem it solves moose? 😆 in other words, if you have a problem, buy an elk, so what? And may at any an incomprehensible situation buy/sew Moose? 😄 and funny and sad, I don't know the answer.
