  • Today, I’ve mostly been working on an article about luxury, adapting a talk I gave at @christiesedu in July. A reference I’ve been using features Freddie the Emperor Penguin with Polar Bear Claw Necklace by Felieke van der Leest (whose work I love). How could I not share? 🐧

Here’s another shot from the BBC Dynasties shoot, on which I worked as an expedition photographer and camera assistant together with @badgerboy05 and @willplawson in 2017 in Antarctica. The adventure of a lifetime!
.
In the previous shot I showed you an egg-handling training session, while in this shot, I am finally showing you the real thing. Shortly after this female had laid her egg, she carefully dropped it onto the icy ground and started walking backwards. The male then slowly moved towards the egg while orienting it correctly with his beak. A few moments later he had managed to safely put it on his feet, taking the sole responsibility for their unborn chick. He would now have to incubate the egg for 6-9 weeks with the female leaving for the open sea in order to feed.
.
At first the female had a hard time letting go of her precious egg, but in the end she knew that her chick would only survive if she remained strong and healthy. In a very powerful moment, she turned away from her mate and her egg and left the colony into the great open nothingness of the Antarctic desert. At this point, all the male could do is hope that she would eventually return to take over their chick once it had hatched. .
TONIGHT you will finally get the answer whether this leap of faith paid off in the end! :-)
.
I cannot be more excited to tell you, that TONIGHT, November 18th at 8pm GMT on BBC one (that’s only 45 minutes away), you will finally get to see our BBC Dynasties emperor penguin film!!! Tune in and make sure not to miss it! It would mean the world to us! :-)
