Over the past few months I have been sharing all of the reasons #whyihike in collaboration with @eddiebauer. It’s made me reflect on why I first started hiking (spoiler: to impress a boy), my first backpacking trip wherein my mom and I had perfect weather at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the friends that I’ve made along the way, the adventures (and misadventures) and all of the bumps and bruises and sliced open feet and tendonitis along the way. But this morning as I re-re-re-pack my bag for my first solo backcountry trip I realize that, at the root of it all, its because ten years ago if anyone had told me that I would be physically capable of (and actually enjoy) packing everything that I needed to sustain myself for a few days or a week, hoist it onto my back and march up the side of the mountain… I would have checked them into the looney bin. The only times anyone ever told me that I was strong when I was growing up was in reference to my will when I was being exceptionally stubborn. The real reason that I hike is because it reminds me that you’re never too old (or too young) or too weak or too busy (or too female) to do that things you never thought you could. ⠀ ⠀ #ebcontributor#liveyouradventure

Last summer I had a lot of really bad luck with weather in the backcountry. It seemed as if the rain was not in a state of torrential downpour it was a thick blanket of smoke for weeks and months on end. It was defeating walking 30+km into a backcountry campground and not being able to see the mountains that I knew existed across the lake only to have to turn around and realize that the hike out would be hours of cold rain and snow back to the car. It was the first time that I questioned my decision to turn my passion into a career. When backcountry permits opened in January I didn’t book a single one. I wasn’t certain if I would want to invest my time and money into more experiences that made me hate the thing I loved most in this world. Instead, I opted to keep an eye on the weather forecast and, if it looks good, research a backcountry trip for the weekend and see if @ryanclennett is down for it. If the weather looks bad I am content spending a Saturday perusing the aisles of Ikea and catching up with friends and family in the city. Per usual I don’t know the reason I feel the need to share this. Maybe it has to do with the picture perfect squares that appear on our phone screens that don’t always reflect the reality of the experiences, maybe it is a reflection on the misconceptions of turning your passions into your career, or maybe I am just really happy with the way that this summer is going - mornings like this with 1:30am wakeup calls and my favourite grey sweater out in the mountains surrounded by glaciers.

The Myra Canyon Trestles trail is a highly-scenic, 12 km (7.5 mi) section of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR). The trail is quite flat, which is perfect for biking (or walking) across its 18 trestle bridges and through its two tunnels. #exploreKelowna#FunFactFriday 📸: @standinginmotion
