The Artist and his work
Hand-painted, carved gourds are a specially craft in several Mantaro Valley villages in Peru. The tradition goes back to pre-Inca periods and the art is passed from generation to generation in the family. Dry gourds are carved with sharp metals and painted with an ignited wood. This elderly man is the head of one such family engaged in the art. In the background is his spouse.
