  • Spider fighting or spider wrestling, far from being a movie pitch for the Sy-Fy Channel is an actual sport children in the Philippines engage in to pass the time and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Unless of course you’re picturing children fighting spiders, in which it isn’t and you’re weird 😳
-
Though cock fighting and indeed most other sports where animals tear each other apart are frowned upon in civilised society, spider wrestling has long slipped under the radar because the majority of the world is in agreement that spiders can go screw themselves. However, the hobby is so lucrative and time consuming that the Filipino government has actively tried to crack down on the sport in the past because of children ignoring their education in lieu of becoming the worlds most terrifying beast-master.
-
Some champion spiders have been known to fetch price tags of several dollars a piece, though that may not seem like a lot, remember that one, these are children and two, this is for a spider. We’re betting most people reading this would pay someone 5 dollars to take a spider the hell away from them, so paying even half that to have someone give you one that they have specifically trained to be aggressive as possible is so positively insane we’re itching just writing that sentence 🕷

  • On Good Friday 1521, Magellan’s ships saw a fire on an island and approached the island we know today as Limasawa off of Leyte. With their approach they met up with a small boat of about 9 men who understood the language Magellan’s interpreter from Sumatra was speaking. They were given gifts then they said they would retrieve their leader. About two hours later they returned with their leader Raja Calambu. Magellan stated that he came as friends and the two spoke of casi casi the Malay ritual of becoming blood brothers. Seeing that both parties were agreeable they exchanged gifts.

Later they visited the Raja’s palace, described as a large nipa type structure, then the Raja sent for lechon and rice for dinner. The second round of food included fish in its sauce and rice. While eating, Nick Joaquin’s version of the story states that with every bite of food the Raja and his men drank a good amount of tuba, coconut wine. All drank so much that Pigafetta’s companion became drunk. Joaquin’s study of the evening shows how the people of the archipelago and of Spain commonly drank spirits with their food as it was safer than water back then, but Joaquin points out that Filipinos held their drink better than Westerners during that time.

Tuba, coconut wine, was the preferred drink of the Visayans.

The Bontoc Igorots choice fermented drink was Basi, a sugar cane wine.

The Ibaloi Igorots drink of choice was Tapuy, a rice wine.

The people of the archipelago drank these wines all day during their different rituals and with food.

  • Religion is the cornerstone of faith for most Filipinos as the Philippines remains the third-largest Catholic population in the world with 80 percent of the population identifying themselves as Catholic.

Filipinos gather together in churches where priests preach the Word of God, choirs sing with devotion, and the church itself is adorned with images and mosaics of angels and various saints – a scene held together by a crucified Jesus Christ in the middle of the altar.

Wondering about the process on how a servant of God becomes a saint?  Read the life stories of Filipino servant of God, blessed and saints, and the procedure on how to be declared saint of the Catholic Church at www.GoodNewsPilipinas.com.

  • A Good Friday Reflection: Sinaing na Tulingan

In real life you will be “cut and salted” and will be in pain, you will feel like you’re in a “boiling water” for a long time because of life trials but little did you know that these experiences will lead you to become the best person that you are right now.

Just like this dish, the fish has been cut and salted, crushed, threw spices at and slow cooked for almost 5 hours then after the process it turns our to be one of the best tasting, extremely tender Filipino Dish paired with a hot steamed rice.. a perfect 5 star experience!

Always remember, that it its not the traditional practices that will make you a good person..it is how you treat other people how you show true kindness and how you show sincerity in dealing with them..❤️ #jeepneyjaytee #greatsmilefamilydental #pinoyendorser

Tonight will mark the end of another lunar cycle with a Pink Full Moon in Virgo. With each full moon comes an opportunity to forge new paths of personal growth and is a great time to reflect on the past 28 days. And for those who believe in the power of crystals, it’s also an opportune time to purify and recharge them.
-
⚡️a #fullmoonritual allows us to harness the powerful lunar energy to release what no longer serves us and absorb healing and positive vitality. This creates the perfect environment to reset the vibrational frequency of our crystals so that they can renew and be most effective. To help get you started, we’ve included this simple step-by-step ritual from @crystal_visions_store below:
-
1️⃣OVERNIGHT MOONLIGHT
Crystals like to be earthed or grounded, just like our bodies do. If you don't have access to some earth or lawn, you can place them on a windowsill or on a natural surface like a wooden plate, on a balcony. The important part is that they are in the moonlight. Leave them there overnight.

2️⃣INTENTIONAL RECHARGE
What would you like your crystals to support you in? Maybe there is a goal that you have for the upcoming month? As always, try to focus on a NEED vs. a WANT when you set your intentions. You can say these intentions aloud or write them on a piece of paper. Do what feels right for you.

3️⃣GIVE THANKS
Lastly, it's important to express your gratitude to your crystals, the Universal Energy, God, or whatever your higher power may be.
-
☝🏼It’s worth noting that clouds do NOT effect the moon’s energy. So whether it’s overcast or raining, you can still cleanse and recharge your crystals with the full moon’s energy.
-

  • The National Bird of the Philippines is the Philippine Eagle. It is the largest of all eagles and is called ágila (“eagle”) and háribon (from haring ibón, “king bird”) traditionally.
It is a large bird-of-prey, with a long arched bill and strong claws. It stands at about 3 and half feet tall with a wingspan of about 7 feet. It has striking blue-grey eyes and dark brown plumage. It’s most outstanding trait is the crest of feathers around its head formed from elongated nape feathers.
The Philippine Eagle is only found in Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. There are only a few individuals remaining in Leyte and Samar, and the species may have disappeared from Luzon.

Unfortunately the Philippine Eagle’s low reproductive rate and need for dense forests have led to their endangered species status with the number of adult eagles estimated at 226 and a total of 350 to 670 including juveniles.

These eagles are monogamous and mate for life. The whole breeding cycle, including courtship through to the independence of the eaglet, takes around two years. Courtship and mating can occur in the air. Their aerial displays serve to mark their nesting area and to reinforce the relationship between the breeding pair. Following copulation, only one egg is laid. If the egg fails to hatch, or if the chick dies prematurely, the mating pair will nest again the following year. The eagles display strong parental care, with the mother incubating the egg and the male foraging for food. Philippine Eagles Live about 40 years in the wild.
If you would like to join in efforts to save the Philippine national bird please visit Philippineeagledotorg.
