I am grateful for ability to use my breath to calm my nervous system. It allows me to have control over my stress levels.

From the very first moment that I started to regain balance with my own mental health I have had a burning passion to use my experiences to help others.
.
When mothers experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders it is not something that is isolated to them. I believe there is a huge lack of support for mothers that are struggling in this world where, everywhere you turn, somebody is openly displaying so-called ‘perfection’.
.
It is my absolute dream to be able to create a safe and supportive space where mothers from anywhere in the world can come together for education, support, and one-on-one coaching, to enable them to feel empowered to create freedom and abundance within themselves, their families, and their communities.
.
This dream has started unfolding with the launch of our FITBabes Freedom Inspired Tribe Online Health and Wellness Community, and now I am looking to take the next step so I can personally support mothers to succeed on their own journey.

I cannot underestimate how important this is!
.
You cannot support, love, or empower anyone else unless you are supported, loved, and empowered yourself, and the best way to do this is to fill your own cup first.
.
Sure other people can do these things for you, and yes it feels good, but the most authentic love can only come from within you.
.
When you reach that place of truly, genuinely loving yourself, you won’t need to look elsewhere for support and empowerment...it will just be there.

Problems arise when people don’t acknowledge their emotions and give themselves the space to process what they are feeling.

One of my favourite things to eat is a caesar salad.
.
In this one I’ve traded out the Cos lettuce for nutrient dense spinach and kale leaves, used ‘old fashioned’ bacon like you’d make at home, made my own dressing with high quality olive oil, and added homemade gluten free garlic croutons.
.
It’s definitely not perfect, but it makes for a damn good treat!

Journalling has always seemed a bit illusive to me, although I absolutely love to write. I’ve always had this belief that to journal you needed some structure. You need to write everyday, and write about your day, about you life, and what is going on for you. Every entry would have a date, and everything is recorded in chronological order. Therefore, I spent many years dreaming of journalling, but unable to stick to it on an everyday basis.
.
What I have learned though, is that my perception simply isn’t true. Journalling can be anything you want or need it to be. For me, it is writing whenever I feel the need to write.
.
When my kids were babies, when I’ve struggled in relationships, when I’ve been anxious, when I’ve been depressed, and even when I’ve been over stimulated, the very simple act of writing has always been a way for me to organise my thoughts. Writing allows me to get thoughts from my over active mind into paper. It allows me to record moments in time. It allows me to say things to people that I just can’t verbalise.
.
Never underestimate the power of emptying your mind. Even if pen and paper writing isn’t for you, maybe typing will work, or just making a voice recording - even if you never listen to it. I very rarely read what I’ve written!
.
So...do you journal? If so, how?

  • 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠.
I had a fabulous time away this week, travelling to Queenstown to see my little sister get married.
.
When we are away from home it always bring into perspective just how lucky we are to have the freedom to pack up and go on holidays. When the kids were little, and my anxiety was really extreme, I found it just too difficult to manage a family holiday. Hubby would organise and plan, he would drive and do things with the kids, and he would do his very best to ensure I enjoyed our time as much as I could. But, so often it was just too much for me to manage. I am so grateful for the fact that he was willing to do all that for me, for us.
.
If you are feeling down, or anxious, or unable to cope...or maybe all of the above, it is so so important to make time for yourself, to make time for adventures, and to make time to enjoy some quality interaction with the people you love the most.
.
It doesn’t have to be big. Maybe you go to a local park and just watch the kids play, maybe you go out for a meal, or visit family friends, or maybe you do take a trip away somewhere. Whatever you do, don’t let it be stressful. It is so important that you make these times to relax, because whenever you create the space for your relationships to grow and your worries to fall away, you are taking another step towards the life of freedom and abundance that you absolutely deserve 💕
.

I am grateful for my cooking and baking knowledge. It allows me to take a recipe and change it just enough to make it my own.

I am grateful for my ability to put words on paper. It allows me to use writing as a creative outlet, as well as a means of organising my thoughts.
.
I am grateful for my emotional sensitivity. While some people consider me overly emotional, it is this depth of feeling that allows me to be so empathetic towards what other people are going through.
.
I am grateful for my eyebrows, because they have finally grown back after years of over-plucking!
.
I am grateful for my perfectionist tendencies. They allow me excel at almost everything I do.

I ask my myself ‘why?’ quite a lot these days. Why am I trying so hard? Why do I put in so much effort? Why do I share like I do? Why would anyone even care?

Well...here’s why

It’s for my daughter, so she can see that it’s possible to grow into a strong, passionate, driven young woman who can achieve anything her heart desires.
It’s for my son, so he can see that it’s normal for women to be powerful, passionate nurturers who can thrive as his equal, not his competition.
It’s for my husband, so he can chase his dreams and live a life of passion.
It’s for all the mums and mums-to-be, so they can see it’s normal to find motherhood a challenge, it’s normal to sometimes question why you even wanted a child, and it’s normal to feel like you’re not ok some days.

It’s my aim to show other mums that, no matter how they’re feeling, it is possible for things to get better, it is possible to feel vibrant again, it is possible to regain your independence, and it is possible to chase your dreams.
.
If I can succeed in empowering just one mum to create freedom and abundance for herself and her family, then I have achieved what I set out to do.
.

Being gifted is NOT about finding everything easy!
.
There are soooo many misperceptions about what it means to be ‘gifted’, but the one that I hate the most is that gifted kids don’t need extra help because they’re smart, right?
.
Of course they are smart, but what people don’t realise is that there is a whole raft of other stuff going on, and if a gifted kid’s needs are not met they can be left believing that they are worthless and stupid.
.
As a gifted mum, of two gifted kids, I am passionate about making sure our kids grow up understanding their potential and themselves, because these out-of-the-box thinkers and doers are the very people who hold the power to bring significant change to our future.

Then why am constantly hearing to this voice in my head that’s telling me I’m useless, hopeless, not a good mum...all because there’s some mess!

Well guess what? I’M NOT LISTENING! 🙉

Every mum has that mean girl that lives inside her head. What matters is not that she’s there, but how you deal with her. For me, when she’s really bugging me I’m quite fond of the phrase “fuck off bitch, this is my head!” When I can hear her but I’m not particularly bothered, I tend to just observe and ignore.
.
You should never beat yourself up because she’s saying mean things, because those things are never true! And you should never beat yourself up because she’s there in the first place, because *NEWSFLASH* - she’ll always be there!
.
What you need to focus on is changing your habit of listening to her. Notice when she pops up, observe what she has to say, and consciously chose to ignore it. Don’t get me wrong, this takes a bit of practice, but when it becomes a process that happens automatically, the feeling will be one of complete liberation.

I’m Becs - mum of two, wife, radiographer & student sonographer. I also have a certificate in graphic design, and I am a qualified chef.

I live in NZ - Christchurch to be specific, I love learning, reading, being in nature, snowboarding, and sitting in silence. I am a recovering perfectionist, and a self proclaimed food snob.

I have been through some very tough times with my mental health, having had ante- and post-natal depression, and electro-convulsive therapy as part of my treatment.
.
I am uber passionate about womens health and wellbeing. Especially mum’s health and wellbeing, and especially mum’s mental health and wellbeing. I have a massive amount of experience from my own mental health journey, in the community and as an inpatient, and from where I am now, and how I am using good nutrition and physical activity to keep my mental health in a great place.

From this passion I have grown my side hustle, so I can support, coach, mentor, inspire, and provide any mum with the opportunity to up-level her self worth, her health, her fitness, and her life.

I cannot underestimate how important this is!

You cannot support, love, or empower anyone else unless you are supported, loved, and empowered yourself, and the best way to do this is to fill your own cup first.
.
Sure other people can do these things for you, and yes it feels good, but the most authentic love can only come from within you.
.
When you reach that place of truly, genuinely loving yourself, you won’t need to look elsewhere for support and empowerment...it will just be there.

It’s kinda chilly where I am this morning...only 11 degrees celsius in fact!

From the very first moment that I started to regain balance with my own mental health I have had a burning passion to use my experiences to help others.
.
When mothers experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders it is not something that is isolated to them. I believe there is a huge lack of support for mothers that are struggling in this world where, everywhere you turn, somebody is openly displaying so-called ‘perfection’.
.
It is my absolute dream to be able to create a safe and supportive space where mothers from anywhere in the world can come together for education, support, and one-on-one coaching, to enable them to feel empowered to create freedom and abundance within themselves, their families, and their communities.
.
This dream has started unfolding with the launch of our FITBabes Freedom Inspired Tribe Online Health and Wellness Community, and now I am looking to take the next step so I can personally support mothers to succeed on their own journey.

Today was one of those days when ALL of my self doubt and (dare I say it) self hatred, has bubbled to the surface. My usual pattern is to spend time dwelling on how useless I am, and then look for things outside of myself that are bringing me down, I mean it must be something someone else has done right? 🙄
.

As a result of all the learning and reflection I have done over the last year, tonight I was able to take a step back and observe that my reasoning and blaming was my brain doing its very best to stay on autopilot and hang onto the overrated comfort zone. What I know, however, is that change and growth cannot come from a place of comfort.
.
A very wise lady told me once that we cannot change what we cannot see, therefore the first step I needed to take was to notice what I say to myself, notice the negative and degrading comments I aim at myself, and think about them - are they true, would I say them to a friend, why am I being so mean to myself?
.
[Insert realisation]
.
After some observing and some thought (and quite a bit of ranting 😬) I have realised that I am in fact starting to notice these negative thinking patterns when they arise. And after some wise and real words from my besties/business partners, I realised that this was my path to walk today. This has been my lesson, and in order to move forwards I must accept what has been and use it to improve my tomorrow.

  • If I’m honest, I’ve been playing way below my potential for my entire life...(thus far). ———————————————————-
Only doing enough to get by and be considered acceptable. 
My pattern has been this within my health, sport, career, friendships and intimate relationships.

Just like when I was a 100m sprinter, I was out of blocks well before anyone else had even reacted...but then I would allow myself to ease up. ———————————————————-
I often get a lot of praise for these early ‘Starts’ out of the blocks and I can see my pattern is to then self sabotage and ‘ease up’, and take my foot off the pedal....resulting in everyone else catching up to me or surpassing me. ———————————————————-
The paradox is that I have always wanted a big life, to be the best version of myself and I’ve never wanted to settle for anything less. ———————————————————-
So why do I keep playing below the line then??
There’s an elephant in the room....its name is anxiety and fear. ———————————————————-
Majority of the time it creeps in so softly that I don’t even know i’m playing below the line or making decisions that are limiting me. ———————————————————-
Sometimes it’s so loud, it’s all consuming. For me, it can get to the point where I can’t leave the house or say yes to things I would probably quite like to say yes to. It can also look like internal panic attacks on flights where I’m feeling like I’m going to die and have to use all of my energy and focus just trying not to throw up or faint. ———————————————————-
But the underlying killer, is the self sabotage. 
It’s the part of ourselves that we stupidly listen to. The one that keeps us in our box, our prison. ———————————————————-
Fear needs to be our biggest motivator - taking us towards our dreams and not away from them. 
It’s human nature to feel afraid. 
Let fear fuel your passion. 
Your only limit is your soul and that’s limitless.

One of my favourite things to eat is a caesar salad.

In this one I’ve traded out the Cos lettuce for nutrient dense spinach and kale leaves, used ‘old fashioned’ bacon like you’d make at home, made my own dressing with high quality olive oil, and added homemade gluten free garlic croutons.
.
It’s definitely not perfect, but it makes for a damn good treat!

  • I don’t like to use labels but to tell my story I will...

For me, I have always identified with being an introvert and an empath...both of which mean that you have a deep inner world that feels deeply and takes in A LOT of energy and information. ———————————————————
Somewhere along the way because of this and all the past hurts and trauma (that we all go through), I decided on a subconscious level that I would just sit on top of all my feelings and operate from a very limited existence. 
Not feeling much. 
Not thinking much. 
And not connecting to much. 
Through this, I lost myself. 
I lost my voice. 
I lost my ability to know what I truly needed and wanted. ———————————————————
With the support of my intuitive counsellor, I am relearning to:
Breathe. 
Relax.
Let go. 
Release. 
Surrender. 
And Keep Breathing. ———————————————————
This isn’t an easy task for someone who has been holding on so tightly to control and likes to do everything on her own. ———————————————————
When you partake in the above...it’s not very comfortable and is actually quite painful, physically (remember everything is interconnected). ———————————————————
But we all have two choices, to remain the same or to choose a new path...often one that’s been calling us for a long time. 
I can choose to keep my old ways and patterns (that did serve me well in the past in order to survive, but are outdated now). Or I can choose to trust, relax and let go and see how easy life happens for me.

Everyday I’m fighting these thoughts, while in my heart I know none of it is true. 
Everyday I fail to share how my health has changed, because I think I may be judged. 
Everyday the people around me miss out on improving their health, and it’s all because I have so much negative chatter in my head. .
ALL OF IT SEEMS SO SILLY AND ACTUALLY A LITTLE BIT SELFISH!!

All I really want to do is help people. Share my health journey with people who can walk their own journey along side me. Tell people how my immune system is rock solid, how my eyebrows have grown back, how my dandruff has gone away, how my nails grow so fast it’s mad, how my bowels have become normal! 💩(tmi - sorry!🀣).

So my goal is to talk more, to share more, to ask more questions, and to be open and say “hey, this is awesome, can I talk to you about it?”.
.
BUT...don’t let that stop YOU asking ME some questions, because if you do you’ll soon realise - negative chatter aside, I love to talk! 😃

I am lucky that I have such evolved girlfriends who can give their external viewpoint to me without judging me or pushing me into their way of thinking. 
They offer me growth and perspective through their pure hearts and ability to listen and support.

I don’t usually have two espressos in a day, but today is one of 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘎𝘊 days. Both kids struggling with their morning mood. Caitlin fighting off her anxiety (successfully), Sam just in a general bad mood.
.
I can’t speak for other mums, but I really struggle when my kids are finding stuff hard. My mum instinct wants to jump in and save the day but I know how important it is that both kids learn how to manage challenges themselves.

Do any of my mum followers find this stuff hard too? How do you support your little people and yourself?

I could almost hear the thoughts
“Her stomach is flatter than mine”
“He looks more pumped than me”

Why oh why do people feel the need to compare?

After noticing that my mind just went on auto pilot, telling me the usual “you’re not good enough” bullshit. And thats exactly what it is...BULLSHIT!
.
Am I over weight? Yes
Do I look good in active wear? Not really
Was my hair a mess? Definitely 
Do I go bright red when I work out? Every time
.
But you know what? I was still there, in the gym, at 6am, doing the best I can to be the beat I can.
.
Is that good enough for me? HELL YES!

When you know what your top values are you can make choices that allow you to live aligned with them. When you live in alignment with your top values, all sorts of stuff starts falling into place.
.
A year ago I wasn’t even aware that I had ‘top values’ let alone know how to live aligned with them! So as soon as I became aware of what they were I was able to start making small changes towards aligning myself. Just really simple things like, make a different snack choice, read a different book, exercise one extra day, cut the ties in a toxic friendship, get up 30mins earlier etc. 
The difference I can now see, in so many areas of my life, is just incredible. My health and fitness has improved, my mental health has improved, my commitment to my work has improved, my friendships are stronger, my family is happier, and I feel fantastic (most of the time 😉).
Just because I know how powerful this exercise can be, I’m just gonna put it out there that if you want to the exercise, if you need a hand, have a question, need some support, or even if you’re just having a shit day...reach out. Send me a DM. I’m here, and I’m a fabulous listener 💕

So, part nine. Now that I’ve told my story, it’s question time. ⠀
Why is it only the worst of the worst that receive help from our public health service? What is happening to all those other people? And what about all those mums?⠀
In NZ we have a problem with suicide. It is horrific, and as a nation we should be ashamed. ⠀
When a person is mentally unwell it is potentially complex to try and understand all the facets of their life and how this fits with their illness. ⠀
When a mother is mentally unwell this increases tenfold. You are no longer dealing with an individual. You are dealing with a woman who is inextricably linked to her children regardless of their age and whether they live with her or not. And because of emotions like love, guilt, shame, responsibility, the need to protect, etc... the depth of suffering a mother may experience is essentially endless.⠀
So what do we do? Where do we go from here?⠀
Well, as women we need to stand together. We need to show love and support for the mothers who are struggling, and we need to speak openly and honestly of the illness. It doesn’t matter how severe it is, it doesn’t matter what the diagnosis is, and doesn’t matter what part of society you come from, because as long as we stand with our backs turned and our heads in the sand, strong women everywhere will continue to suffer and may never be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential and become the best version of themselves that they can be.

  • There’s a misconception that you need to eat meat to grow lean muscle mass. 
Although many professional athletes don’t eat meat, people still believe that meat equals muscle mass. —————————————————
When you understand how muscle is built, you will realise that animal products are not necessary, and can actually have an adverse effect on your health. —————————————————
Muscle size only increases when two conditions are present:

1⃣You stimulate growth by consistently performing in resistance training, this places stress on the muscle fibers, creating micro-tears in them.

2⃣ You need to eat enough calories to support muscle repair and growth, a small proportion of that must consist of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. 
Amino acids help us recover from training, and they help damaged muscle tissues repair and grow.
