🇬🇧 The fortress of Palmanova is an extraordinary #fortress built by the Venetians since 1593. It consists of 3 fortified circles that make it look like a nine-points star: the first two circles were built by the Venetians in 1593 and 1658, last one by #Napoleon in 1806. At the end of the work of the Napoleonic period, Palmanova was surrounded by three orders of #fortifications made up of embankments, pits, lunettes, rivells, doors and countertops. Since July 9, 2017 the site has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ 🏛Aiutaci a far conoscere il nostro Patrimonio🏛

Wiki: “At the beginning of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), Heusden was occupied by the Spanish. In 1577, however, following the Pacification of Ghent, the people of Heusden allied with William, Prince of Orange. William consolidated the town's strategic position near the river Meuse, and ordered fortification works to be constructed. Work started in 1579 with the digging of moats and the construction of bastions, walls, and ravelins, and was completed in 1597.”
.
“By the early nineteenth century, the defence works fell into disrepair and were dismantled. In 1968, however, extensive restoration works started, and fortifications were carefully rebuilt, based on and inspired by a 1649 map of the city of Heusden by Johannes Blaeu, son of the famous Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1980, the city of Heusden received the European Urbes Nostrae restoration prize. Heusden currently draws over 350 thousand tourists every year who visit the historic town centre and walk the walls that once made it a formidable stronghold.”

  • A breastwork is a “temporary fortification,” and when the U.S. Army approached Utah in 1857 in order to ensure the peaceful transition of power from Territorial Governor Brigham Young to President Buchanan’s appointee, Alfred Cumming, Young went out the Mormon militia to fortify Echo Canyon, which was the primary passageway into the Salt Lake Valley. They built stone breastworks on the high canyon walls, dug trenches, and dammed the creek. Captain Stewart Van Vliet, went ahead to make arrangement for the army, returned to warn the coming troops that Echo Canyon was a death trap. As the troops’ inability to enter the Salt Lake Valley without considerable bloodshed drew out over the winter of 1857-1858, public opinion of the “Utah War” became more mixed, with one political cartoon depicting Young driving the army away with the help of his “breastworks,” in this case meaning his famous polygamous wives by the dozens. Some of the breastworks are still visible in Echo Canyon today, if you know where to look, and on my most recent visit, I finally found out where to look. #echocanyon #utahwar #utahexpedition #americanfrontier #utahcanyons #utahhistory #mormonhistory #redrocks #cliffs #fortifications #eighteenthcentury #brighamyoung #summitcounty
