  • Lots and lots of spring buds on this potted ORANGE 🍊 tree. A lot of these will fall but even if a quarter make it, we will have a spectacular mid-autumn haul next year
.
WHY DO MY BUDS KEEP FALLING OFF?
.
Sometimes the reason is environmental stress - extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), inconsistent watering, drought and the lack of a thick layer of mulch to help keep the tree moist
.
At other times however it’s related to infertile or poor soil
.
Microorganisms in the soil feed off the decomposed carbon from organic matter for growth and nitrogen for protein production to be able to further break down organic matter into an inorganic form that plants can absorb through a soluble mineral form
.
Organic matter contain varying levels of sulphur, carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen and these levels often determine how quickly the decomposition process can occur for the subsequent release of nutrients
.
More specifically if the carbon:nitrogen ratio is too high, mineral nitrogen becomes immobilised and unavailable to plants
.
A low carbon:nitrogen ratio however ensues organic matter can be mineralised and available to plants
.
Water also plays a crucial role to soil mineralisation. If the water has poor soil infiltration, the process will be slowed. Too much water and you end up with nitrogen leaching - a big problem often on wet and cold sandy soils
.
Denitrification is also a major problem but more so in wet summers containing heavy saturated soils whose nitrate salts are re-converted back into nitrogen gas and released back into the atmosphere
.
Temperature is also a problem. Cold temperatures, cold soil and acidic soil all limit the effectiveness of mineralisation and the availability of nutrients at the key growing times
.

One of the easiest herbs to transplant is undoubtedly MINT
.
This plant was transplanted from a pot to a more permanent position a few weeks ago. We literally “mowed” it down to ground level and is now back up and growing well in a shady moist location
.
DID YOU KNOW?
.
A close relative of the garden mint - PEPPERMINT seed is often confused as originating from a “true” peppermint plant
.
You see, native PEPPERMINT is a sterile hybrid cross between water mint and spearmint. It is typically propagated vegetatively by cuttings, runners and root propagation
.
So why are “peppermint seeds” being marketed and sold?
.
This is because breeders are artificially crossing the putative parents of peppermint (water mint and spearmint) however the flavour and fragrance of any seeds produced in this manner will not necessarily have the characteristics of the original sterile variety
.
Most “peppermint” marketed seeds are often the exonerated aromatic fragrance qualities of spearmint
.
Have you ever noticed differences in “peppermint” flavour and aroma from different sources?
.
If you come across a PEPPERMINT shrub that has ‘blown you away’, the next best thing would be to propagate a cutting from that very plant ✅

  • My precious friend @kimlilley626 gave me loads of irises when we moved into this house. They didn’t bloom last year but thankfully they did this year. I love them. ❤️ And now I will morph into that lady who takes clippings/bulbs from her favorite plants and put them in the ground at her new house. That is me. I am that. I feel like I just leveled up in some very grown up way because now I am sentimental about my plants.🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Please tell me I’m not alone in this?

  • IIIT'S A GREAT DAY FOR PLANTING !!
🌞🙌🙂🌻
Cottage garden tip..
Use plants with flowerheads of a similar size to create that cottage garden effect !!
Small, creeping , ground cover plants with striking 'candy shop ' blooms..( thats what i like to call them !!) Mixed colours..combine pastels and zesty shades so when they all get together for a mingle they'll look like petal confetti !
And i tend to choose specimens with smaller , softer lush green foliage. The longer the stem and the smaller the leaf, they lend to draping over cobbled walls and seeking out crevaces to give you that 'been there forever ' look !! You can go for rigid stems further towards the back of the border . They'll stand up to that summer breeze and sway above the tinies, providing them with a little well needed shade !! Enjoy !! 🙂💕💚

  • Happy Full Moon in Libra...again...
Spotlight on relationships and completions. 29 degrees means the learning point, the last chance to get it right.
My take on the moon tonight is to relax and let it all come to me when it’s supposed to. And not to forget how powerfully I can create my life exactly how I want it to be. x
