Ke Dil Abhi Bhara Nahin - Sahir Ludhiyanavi
Aadab Doston! I had concluded the Chikankari series last week but my inbox is still brimming with messages about Chikankari. I am overwhelmed to see the love you all have shown towards the craft and feel hopeful about its future. .
This pure Georgette kurta-set with Chikankari and Mukaish work is 5 years old. I bought it from a local shop. Such pieces are available, all across the Lucknow market, in off-white and white. You can dye them in the colour of your choice.
Several design houses and NGOs have played an important role in reviving Chikan from a phase when it had sunk into oblivion. They are responsible for shaping its contemporary form. Hopefully, I'll write about them someday. It might take years of research but I'll start working on it soon.
I request all those of you asking for source recommendations to have some patience. I might share something in the coming days.
These pictures were taken at the British Residency, Lucknow in December 2017, by the talented @aseempremsadhana. It was for a special series featuring my childhood friend Sana @drooolicious. I had shared the last two pictures then, the first two had remained with me, unposted. I rediscovered them day before and thought of sharing them 'kyunki Chikankari se...dil abhi bhara nahin'. I am still not done romancing this exquisite craft and probably never will be.
The British Residency is one of my favourite places in Lucknow. It retells the story of Lucknow's role in the first war of independence. The 'Lakhauri' brick walls still have cannon and gunshot marks that recount the events of 1857 with poignant silence. The buildings of the Nawabi Era were built using these Lakhauri' bricks and it is believed to be one of the reasons that gave Lucknow its name 😊
