  • How much do you know about the Glens of Antrim? From the County Antrim town of Larne, a series of rugged cliffs stretch for 80 miles, broken only by nine deep green glens - known as the Glens of Antrim. This one👆is Glenariff and is widely regarded as the fairest of them all! And you can see why. The forest park within the Glen is home to the beautiful Waterfall Walk and if you plan to visit, we highly recommend bringing a camera. Credit for this capture goes to @henry_chuong 👏 #discoverni #northernireland #glensofantrim #countyantrim #glenariffforestpark #waterfallwalk

  • Kingdom of Dál Riata
Red Bay Castle
(Irish: Caislen Camus Rhuaidh)
It was built by the Bissett family in the 13th century on the site of an earlier motte-and-bailey outpost of the Kingdom of Dál Riata.
John Mor MacDonald 1st of Dunnyvegmarried Margery Bissett of the Glens of Antrim, and acquired as a result the castle of Red Bay. His descendants known as the MacDonnells of Antrim extended and rebuilt the castle in the 16th century. In 1565, the castle was burned to the ground by Shane O'Neill, chief of the O'Neills of Tyrone; it was rebuilt by Sorley Boy MacDonnell, however later fell into disrepair.
In 1604 the castle was restored and was later destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1652 during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.

  • Soph, sun, sand and seaweed - 4 of my favourite things. I also enjoy a little alliteration from time to time.

  • Searching for my McDonnell ancestors along the Antrim Coast Road, snaking along the Glens of Antrim. One of the most beautiful routes in all of Ireland, if not the world.
Built in the 1830-40s, it linked the remote and wild glens with the wider world.
