  • I’ve been to the New York City area many times, played up and down the Long Island Sound, but I never imagined such a golfing property could exist in this part of the NYC metro. Thanks to @gil_hanse for bringing new life to the gem that has been here for over 100 years.

The par-5 9th hole is a shining example of how No. 4 has been reinvented through Hanse’s vision and touch.  More than 25 pot bunkers are replaced with sprawling, sandy native areas, and a massive crossbunker spans the width of the fairway, connecting with nearby holes and tying together the natural landforms. Green complexes throughout the course have been lowered to fit the landscape, and are complemented by Hanse’s unique bunker designs. This is Hanse’s version and vision of Pinehurst’s Hell’s Half Acre which is no 7 at Pine Valley GC.

A true test and thinking-man's course. Donald Ross demands shot-creation. Off the tee, there are great lines for shot visualization but it can also trick you if not careful or exact. The green complexes at #2 should be studied… I love that once you make it on the green, there are a lot of putts to be made, but hitting the green in regulation is a challenge, due to the upside down dish greens. The greens are even more terrifying now, as they are surrounded by more short grass and sand. The waste areas and sandy scrub are just awesome. Nothing short of spectacular. A true championship course.

Perhaps the most illustrative example of the transformation took place at the par-5 9th. Fazio’s version featured 25 pot bunkers sprinkled liberally throughout. Hanse’s new version sports a massive cross-bunker hazard, a la Pine Valley’s “Hell’s Half-Acre,” that influences play on the second shot. Carry the hazard at its farthest point and you’ll be rewarded with a better angle for the third shot. It’s dramatic, strategic and fits the terrain beautifully 4️⃣

Wow, what to expect at Tobacco Road. Where do I start? Tobacco Road is the most extreme course you’ve ever played . . . but on steroids. There is more “wow” factor at that course then the rest of North Carolina’s offerings combined. It literally is one signature hole after another. Quirky at times? Yes. Difficult at times? You bet. Engaging the whole time? ABSOLUTELY!

The best modern rendition of the biarritz I have seen is at Coore & Crenshaw’s Red Course at Streamsong. The hole is a jaw-dropping display of modern scale and reminiscent of the great biarritz at Yale Golf Club. The hole’s bold characteristics include a 7’ deep front bunker, a 20’ deep swale left of the green, a 6’ deep swale and a 72 yard green which allows the hole to play anywhere from 170 to 240 yards. My favorite aspect of this hole is how difficult the front pin can play because of the deep bunker. This puts risk and doubt in a player’s mind and they typically pick the extra club to be safe.🛑

Sprawling Bethpage Black, designed in the mid-1930s to be “the public Pine Valley,” became the darling of the USGA in the early 2000s, when it played the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens. Then it became a darling of the PGA Tour as host of the 2011 and 2016 Barclays. Now the PGA of America has embraced The Black, awarding it the 2019 PGA Championship, to be played in May not August, and then 2024 Ryder Cup. Heady stuff for a layout that was once a scruffy state-park haunt where one needed to sleep in the parking lot in order to get a tee time.

Named after the nightjar bird that can be heard around the golf course. It is an interesting combo to see Donald Ross part of the original design and the Banks/Raynor duo coming in to renovate after the club acquired more land. In my opinion Whip is one of the most underrated courses I’ve played. One of America’s biggest hidden gems. This golf course is a place that will show you world-class architecture and how the holes fit on the land. With dramatic/Rock-based land formation, the Whip takes full advantage. The course is an adventure, a test, a visual delight, and incredibly exciting to hit shots over and into the magical landforms.

One of the more photogenic holes at Streamsong Blue is the 7th which runs alongside the beautiful 16th from Streamsong Red. The hole plays true to its yardage and the green slopes hard from the right to left. There is a lot of slope you can’t see because of the shrubs, but a shot right of the green will funnel down towards the hole.
