Today we hiked to Gramos, high in the Pindos mountains where Greece borders with Albania. This town was a communist stronghold during the civil war, but the government dropped napalm b on the area in 1949, decimating the communist rebels and effectively ending the war. It’s now a ghost town, but a very picturesque one. #greece#pindosmountains#hiking#outdoors
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.” - Mahatma Gandhi 👴🏾 😿 🇬🇷 .
Sadly our ‘conservation’ holiday learning about and hoping to spot a bear in the wild has been tinged with sadness at how little Greek society seems to value the lives of our furry friends.
Bears are under constant threat of being shot by shepherds. The locals seem not to care for them. The streets and hills are littered with strays trying to fend for themselves. We met this beautiful hunting dog who at first we thought had been abandoned as many are. We were going to try and bring her home until we learned she had an owner. However the ‘hunter’ liked to keep her malnourished - starving dogs make for better hunters 🤷🏼♂️. .
Then there were the beautiful guard dogs kept to protect the sheep who have big chunks of ear cut off when they are puppies and left sore to make them ‘more aggressive’ . And the many other security dogs who live their lives on a short chain.
This is not to say all Greeks have this terrible attitude, some are far more evolved, but crazy to see in a supposedly developed country with an educated population?
