  • FEELING BLUE AT BLUE STONE COTTAGE STUDIO GALLERY
I am drawn to blue. Not just any blue. And blue, incidentally, is not just any colour. 💎

Blue is the rarest pigment in nature, though we are surrounded by blue. It suffuses the sky, the ocean, water and ice, the atmosphere, the distance. Our earth is a blue jewel hung out in space. Blue is the colour of illusion, and of spirituality. 🌎

But did you know, the blue of water is not just a matter of reflection, water is actually blue, due to the interaction between water molecules and light?💧 Blue is the most precious and expensive colour in the history of art. The oldest blue is ultramarine, which (as Byron wrote) is ‘darkly, deeply, beautifully’ blue, and was originally created by the grinding of Lapis Lazuli. Ultramarine means ‘beyond the sea’. 🌊

Over a thousand years ago, it was mined only in Afghanistan. It was prized by the ancient Egyptians. and appears in the Book of the Dead. Its sheer beauty and cost made it the most passionately desired colour of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque artists, through to the Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Van Gogh's Starry Night and Brett Whitely's The Balcony.💎🔵 I have only dipped my toe into blue (might use a brush instead), but it is such a special colour I thought I would share some stuff about blue. The thing is, historically, painting has not just been about representing or copying the world, the materials you use are the world. 💙

If you are feeling blue, come by the studio one weekend.🙂 #blue #bluestonecottagestudiogallery #ultramarine #paint #oilpaintings #landscapepaintings #stellaclarkestudiogallery #visitballarat #haddonstudio #artexhibition #artgallery #artcollector #naturelovers #ballaratartist #bringtheoutsidein #artforthesoul #australianart #australianbush #water #afterrain #waterandgold #dam #sky #lake #artforsale

  • At the Open Studio: Water and Gold

We are in an area where gold once lay around on the ground, or just beneath it, and ran through rivers and streams. It sent people scrambling to gather up its precious fragments. However, that is all over, and time has moved on. Now we realize that perhaps the most valuable thing in this wide brown land is water: water is life.
This current series of works that I am building in Blue Stone Cottage Studio pays homage to the allure of grassland after rain, of brimful dams and shining wetlands, amidst the raw and weathered beauty of the region's landscapes. They celebrate burnished grasses, sun-burnt fields, a luminous lake with its yellow reeds, golden wattle, and the light that falls through eucalypts onto the brightness of water.
Without doubt, we now face challenges in regaining and conserving the wealth of a thriving natural environment. These artworks are a tribute to the beauty of water in dry places.
A selection of these works will be on display during the open studios of this weekend, Sunday March 10th and Monday 11th, and also the Arts Trail weekend, May 4th and 5th.
