  • Hair loss and hair graying have been long-believed to be a consequence of genetics and aging. Despite advances in our understanding of environmental factors (diet, lifestyle, etc.) in hair loss, the current model still stands.⁣
⁣
Vitamin D receptors are highly expressed in both the hair follicle and the skin that incubates it. This suggests it plays a role in the health of both the follicle and the skin.⁣
⁣
At a molecular level, vitamin D activates genes that are important for maintaining hair follicle health:⁣
⁣
✔️ Nephronectin: a protein around cells that maintains the stem cells needed for hair follicle regeneration after shedding and supports the structure required for a healthy hair follicle⁣
✔️ Fibronectin: a protein around cells that prevents inflammation and supports the structure of the hair follicle. Removal of the fibronectin receptor leads to inflammation around the mouse hair follicle that contributes to hair loss.⁣
⁣
Vitamin D3 deficiency and abnormalities in vitamin D metabolism have been associated with various forms of hair loss.⁣
⁣
Vitamin D also activates genes responsible for hair pigmentation:⁣
⁣
✔️ Tyrosine hydroxylase: an enzyme that is a critical step in the formation of melanin, the pigment that colors hair.⁣
⁣
Preliminary studies corroborate these findings, demonstrating that premature graying is associated with vitamin D3 deficiency.⁣
⁣
Boosting Vitamin D:⁣
✔️ Safe sun exposure without sunscreen⁣
✔️ Eat magnesium-rich foods⁣ to support Vitamin D absorption
✔️ Ensure balance in the body by consuming the other three fat-soluble vitamins: A, E, and K.⁣

  • AL♡PECIA AWARENESS MONTH 💙⁣
•⁣
Above are just 8 of the many incredible humans that I have got to know through the Alopecia Instagram community. Thankyou all for being so kind to take part! Everyday you do an amazing job of proving that beauty goes deeper than the surface, normalising hair loss, and creating a safe zone and a happy place for fellow Alopecians to find some peace in what is or has happened to them. ⁣

The first quote I came across on my journey was the one above...⁣
‘ 𝐿𝑒𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝒻𝒾𝓃𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊, 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒽𝒶𝒾𝓇 ‘⁣

It’s the one that really stuck, and the one that really rings true. I want to spread this message as far as I possibly can, so it would mean the world to me if you see this, to share it! You can share it on your Instagram stories by just clicking the button that looks like a little paper aeroplane! I never knew this community existed until quite a way into my journey, & I just wish I’d known sooner, it helped me heal so much & this post might just reach someone who really needs it... ⁣
Thank-you ⁣

  • New season, new hair. A few steps out of the wig comfort zone.
⠀
This is Ariana by Jon Renau from their 2019 Fall Collection and she is unlike anything I’ve tried in a synthetic wig! Wowza!!
⠀
Measuring 20” from the nape she is the longest synthetic I’ve tried. I’ve also only worn wavy JR styles so she’s my first straight wig from them. This 24b22 shade is bloooooonde and unrooted. I’ll admit it was intimidating when I pulled her out of the box.
⠀
She was way more glamour than this tomboy from the country thought she could pull off. But I’m trying to be braver, and fear no wig. I’m making a statement now to tell myself “I can pull off any damn wig because I say I can!”
⠀
So here we go, head first, so to speak, into some hair adventures.
⠀
Which wig or topper from the new JR release have you been eyeing up?

  • The beautiful thing about acknowledging your wounds and keeping them visible, is that you’re able to connect with others going through something similar. 👯‍♀️For all I know, there could be another girl out there, crying to her husband in the parking lot of a wig shop, too embarrassed and ashamed to go inside. 😂These photos and this community is for you mamacita!!! .
.
When I first started sharing my hair loss journey - I was worried if my story would have a ‘happy ending’ or not. 😞Would my hair grow back 3 times stronger and longer!? Would I one day be able to toss the wigs and go about living my normal life!?🤷🏼‍♀️ I am learning that happy endings aren’t so simple and self centered. True joy is found when you let go of your pride just long enough to let people in. 😏 For me, letting go of pride looks like photos like this. I think it’s funny how God uses your biggest insecurities and struggles to make you stronger, if you let Him. 💪🏼
.
I don’t necessarily enjoy taking photos of my scalp. I don’t enjoy going to the grocery store and wondering if people can tell if I’m wearing a wig. I don’t enjoy putting Monistat on my scalp every night. (Google it for hairloss lol). But it is what it is! 🤷🏼‍♀️These are pretty defining moments in my life.☝🏼 Will I shy away and let my insecurity win? 😾Or will I own my insecurity and make it one of the best parts of me? 😺idk but I don’t want to waste one more day of my life worrying about something I simply cannot control. .

The hair restoration institute said I had androgenic alopecia. I didn’t get a biopsy done because I didn’t feel like paying someone to take a slice of skin off of my scalp so I guess I’m not 100% sure that’s what it is. I don’t really care anyway. 😏my bloodwork is normal and I feel great!! 🤪All I can do is take care of myself and share my story in hopes that it’ll help someone else. ♥️ .
.

PS this wigs name is Hanna from @uniwigs. She’s a beautiful color. I’m having a tough time with the lace but I think I cut it too short. Live and learn. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • I've finally got teeny tiny baby lashes coming througgghhhh! It feels like forever since I last had lashes, and they seem to have taken extra long to grow back this time. Whenever this happens I get so scared that I've fucked them up for good and they'll never grow back. Praying that never happens 🙏🏼 Please tell me I'm not the only one that overthinks like this with #trich?! 🙃
