  • Tendons are tissues that connect muscles to bone. The flexor muscles, located in the forearm, allow the fingers to bend. When the flexor muscle contracts, it pulls the associated tendon which in turn causes the attached finger to bend. The tendons on the palm side of the hand and fingers are called flexor tendons.⠀
⠀
Bending or straightening the finger, the tendons move through “tendon sheaths,” which keep them close to the bone. The flexor tendons are under constant tension, much like a rubber band. If a tendon is cut or torn, it is impossible for the tendon to heal on its own. Flexor tendons are very close to the surface of the skin; as a result, they are easily susceptible to injury from lacerations.⠀
⠀
Certain sports and activities can cause flexor tendon injuries. These injuries most often occur in football. An injury can occur when a finger is forcefully pulled to an extended position. The flexor tendon is pulled off the bone, the affected finger is unable to flex. In football, this is often called “jersey finger.” In sports that require a lot of arm and hand strength (such as rock climbing), tendons and/or their sheaths can also be stretched or torn.⠀
⠀
Diagnosis: ⠀
These types of injuries can be difficult to diagnose. Depending on the severity of the laceration, you may still be able to bend your finger. Typically, it cannot be fully bent or extended even with a minor tear, but it can be difficult to determine whether it is a full tear and any damage to the bones without an x-ray.⠀
⠀
Symptoms:⠀
A patient with a flexor tendon injury is usually unable to flex or bend the affected finger.⠀
⠀
Prevention:⠀
There is no conclusive evidence that flexor tendon injuries can be specifically prevented. They are more common during contact sports where it is possible for the finger to over-extend, and in people with rheumatoid arthritis, whose tendons are generally weaker.
