Everyone has heard that meditation is generally a “good thing to do.” It’s not always clear how to best start. How do you do it? Am I doing it right? Am I doing it for long enough? Is it not going to work for me because I get too distracted? Will it get easier? These are common questions but the good news is meditation doesn’t have to be a long, complicated process to be beneficial. In fact, a 2008 study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology illustrated a significant increase in perceived happiness levels with only 15 mins/day 5x/week. Other studies have shown by brain MRI scans that after only 8 weeks of 10 min/day meditation that the amygdala, the body’s flight or flight responder, shrinks in size, reducing stress. So how do you get started?? .
1. Start with short intervals. 10 mins/d is infinitely better than 70 mins in one sitting. Even a few mins is better than none and helps create a habit.
2. Find a quiet place with few distractions. This will allow for better concentration. Some people find it helpful to start with a simple meditation app like Insight Timer or 10% happier, but these are certainly not necessary. .
3. Try counting. If you’re having trouble concentrating, count your breaths. I sometimes count up to 5 and repeat. You can also practice pranayama, a breathing exercise for meditation.

Okay so I’m not usually one for sappy captions.... but the past 8 months of my life have been completely indescribable. My whole life I’ve struggled with depression and being extreeeemely self conscious & i honestly never thought that would change. I can HAPPILY say now after 24 long years on this earth i fucking LOVE myself. I cant even believe how much time of my life i spent hating myself and my appearance just bc of what other people said about me. It literally stopped me from SO MUCH its unbelievable. I guess what I’m trying to say is LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO BE ANYTHING BUT YOURSELF. I wish it wouldn’t have taken me 24 years to get here but better late than never right??? SO beyond grateful for the people in my life this year ESPECIALLY my girls for always hyping me up and making me dance like no one is watching 🥴😅🤷🏼♀️ Never take life too serious bc i damn sure have for 24 years too long and I don’t plan on doing it for another minute! I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPIER 😍
