Sickle Cell Disease( SCD)Part 1
Awareness, education and access to appropriate information and advice is key.
This week, we would read the first of the write ups on Sickle cell disease.
Our special guest writer is my colleague, Dr Essien-David, a Consultant Hematologist, who is one of the best and an expert on SCD.
Thank you so much🙏🙏🙏 What is Sickle Cell Disease?
They are a group of diseases that arise due to structural abnormalities of the Haemoglobin (Beta haemoglobin chain.) They are inherited as autosomal recessive diseases (in which a person has to inherit the abnormal genes from both parents). The primary problem is a defect in the gene which synthesis the Beta haemoglobin chain.
Sickle cell trait: The person is a carrier. Have one abnormal beta haemoglobin gene and a normal Beta globin gene. The individuals do not exhibit any symptoms.
Sickle cell disease: The person has inherited two abnormal beta haemoglobin genes and one is “S”. Example SC, SD, Spunjab.
Sickle Cell Anaemia: The person has two abnormal Beta haemoglobin genes and both of them are “S”. SS
For couples who are both AS, in every pregnancy, the risk of having an infant with SS is 25%. STATISTICS • SCD is common in Sub Saharan Africa, Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Greece, Italy), India, Saudi Arabia, South America, Caribbean and Central America. • SCD is the most prevalent genetic disease in Africa with 300,000 new births yearly. In Nigeria it accounts for 100,000 new births yearly. The incidence rate is 2-3%. The disease affects red blood cells and shortens their life span from 90-120 days to 10-20 days. • The key to prevention of the disease is health education and awareness among populations at risk. • Strongly discourage marriage among couples who are both AS.

So a step further from calorie counting is counting ur macros ie protein, carbs and fat within your calorie goal . .
Which is what I do ✅ so why I don’t suggest this right away is coz someone who has no clue about what calories are can find the macros counting very difficult well even calorie counting is quit a task in the beginning though it’s made quit easy with @healthifyme .
So now if ur wondering what that roti is doing on my plate well honestly I would prefer roti and plain white rice 🍚 over anything else for my carbs . .

(Meant to post this earlier but ya girl’s been busy.) The word for the day, is Gratitude. We talked about it in church and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since, because I think it’s something we should all think about.
How thankful are you, when it feels like you have everything or when it feels like you have nothing at all? ~
You should always feel thankful in either situation. When you have this kind of mindset, you will have more positive feelings. ~
I am always thankful for everything in my life, good or bad. One of the things I’m thankful for, is to be able to help people by doing what I love. I have a clip of my guy Mike here because yesterday after our session he told me “I woke up this morning and I realized something. I wanted to thank you for always making creative workouts.” Mike has trained with a few master trainers for over a decade and had to get an amputation 3 years ago. I am his first trainer since his surgery, so it made me so happy to hear him say that ❤️ I always try to do my best to make workouts enjoyable for my clients, because I want them to learn to love fitness as much as I do, then eventually see the importance of it. I am so thankful I have the opportunity to help people in that way, and I hope they’re just as thankful for me ☺️

NUTELLA BANANA CREPES 👌👌👌
These are one of my favorites and is filled with nutrition and taste at the same time. Let's get into the ingredients of the these beautiful yummy banana crepes ⬇️
*one cup all purpose flour
*2 medium sized eggs whole or white
*one tbsp. Unsalted butter
*2 cup whole milk, skimmed milk , almond milk or soya milk
*sugar to taste
*vanilla essence one tsp.
*Set aside the batter for the whole night or if short on time the batter can be kept for an hour or so.
*For the filling chop your favorite fruit like banana, strawberry etc or spreadable item like nutella or peanut butter.
*mix all the ingredients into a smooth, lumpfree batter to build up crispy, nutty crepes.
*the nonstick pan should be pre-heated at medium low flame and greased with butter to avoid any kind of breaking in the crepe.
*this recipe can be transformed into a much healthier version by just adding gridnded nuts and oats to increase its nutritional value.
This is so easy and finger licking good to your taste buds that you would rather make it on repeat for any occasion or any meal of the day. It is a rich source of good carbs, protiens, fats, calcium and what not. It is the best meal for the breakfast table and to kickstart your morning with full energy and nutrition. .
