We did our shopping on Saturday again and MAN... what a difference. Today, we’re working on putting together the more time-intensive components of our weekly meals (like the soup, chicken, and veggie chopping) and leaving the easy stuff for weeknights.
Here’s our lunch/dinner menu for this week:
🍲 Italian wedding soup (not pictured: homemade ciabatta bread! It was Chris and my first attempt at bread-making. Let’s see how this turns out... 🤷♀️😂)
🥗 Loaded fall salad w/ chicken
🌶 Chicken tikka masala w/cauliflower rice (Opted for a prepared sauce to make our lives easier this week. Most likely adding some brown rice from the pantry in there too!)

I’ve learned on my journey to healing my relationship with food, my body, & the scale & then losing 40 pounds and keeping off, there are 2 issues we come up against almost every day. They are: perfectionism & speed.
Here’s how it plays out. When dieting we believe we need to be perfect & when we’re not, we believe we’ve failed so we quit.
We also believe it needs to happen fast and when we don’t get the results we want in a time frame we believe is sufficient, we don’t think it’s working & we quit.
Neither of these beliefs are actually true. Perfection & speed are the enemies of successful sustainable weight loss. It took me a YEAR to lose 40 lbs. You know why? I wasn’t perfect (none of us are) and it took WAY longer than I ever thought it would. But that doesn’t mean there was something wrong with me or that what I was doing wasn’t working.
What it does mean is that I had TONS of opportunity to believe & receive Gods unconditional, never quit love & to replace the lies I believed about myself with the truth. I also had tons of opportunity to practice patience & kindness with myself & to extend grace to myself when I messed up (which happened frequently!) It also means that I had lots of opportunity to see what was going well and what wasn’t & to choose to learn something and grow. This often meant looking at areas that I needed to be honest about & take ownership of. Not in a condemning, judgemental, shaming way. Not at all. But to realize that the results I wanted came down to doing a few simple things as consistently as I could. And to recognize the areas I could be more consistent with.
Weight loss comes down to being in a calorie deficit and being consistent & patient.

i consider myself low maintenance when it comes to hair. why? bc i’m really lazy from spending all my time and energy on my face 😂
i’ve been using these 3 items this year and i’ve got to say, they’ve saved my scalp and hair.
hair & scalp massager ($5): i’m sure you’ve seen this in buzzfeed articles, bc buzzfeed made me do it too 🙃 i go 2-3 days without washing my hair during the drier season to prevent overdrying my scalp. so after a few days, i get a lot of buildup of oils and dry shampoo. after sudsing shampoo into my hair and scalp, this massager really gets into the deep nooks and crannies of my hair and scalp. i feel so much cleaner when i use this.
. @teatreehaircare hair & scalp treatment ($18): if you suffer from a dry, flakey, sensitive scalp in the winter months like i do, i think you’ll really love this. in conjunction with the hair & scalp massager, i use this treatment/mask after shampooing. i use the hair & scalp massager to really get this into my scalp and i let it sit for about 5 mins. there’s an amazing and refreshing sensation that comes with mask. i use this about once a week and it just helps keep my scalp in tip-top shape.

One of my favorite tools that I use to indulge in self-care is this face roller! There are so many options out there regarding which crystal to use for your face. I suggest reading about which each has to offer and choose the one you feel the most pulled toward. I opted for a tiger's eye face roller made by @wabisabibotanicals. I use mine in the morning to help me to de-puff and encourages lymphatic drainage to give me a natural contour. Today marks the 1st anniversary since I started “Hoffing” ❄️ it involves deep, conscious breathing and slowly acclimatising your body to the cold.
To celebrate, I aimed for a 5-minute swim in our beautiful waterfall. The air temperature was 8degC and water about 5degC. Exhilarating!
The changes I’ve felt over the last year? Healthier. Calmer. More resistant to stress factors. It helped me with my grief after my Mom passed away. And is helping with the onset of menopause.
Very grateful to be living a life focussed on being healthy, happy and strong.

I have a hard time sticking to healthy habits. I start out strong and then a week in I drop off - but 5 minutes of deep diaphragm breathing is one thing I’ve stuck with. Maybe because it’s one of the easiest things to do, takes only a few minutes, and does wonders with decreasing my anxiety and re-centering my body.
Diaphragm breathing turns on the parasympathetic nervous system and turns off the overactive sympathetic nervous system - which means it automatically puts us into the “relaxation response”, letting our bodies know we’re safe, just by changing our breath. It’s wild how well it works.
If you’re anything like me, then I KNOW you can add this into your daily routine. Start here and see how a few rounds of breath makes you feel.
1️⃣ Place a hand on your belly and chest
2️⃣ Try to push out the hand on your belly with each inhale and keep the hand on your chest still.
3️⃣ Hold your breath at the top and slooowly breath out, getting out as much air as you can
4️⃣ Repeat 3, 6, or 9 times (or put on a timer).
5️⃣ Feel amazing

We were overwhelmed with all the questions about dairy that we have divided it into three posts. The first is dairy and digestion. Here are the answers to your top 3 questions:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why does dairy give me gas?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The milk of most mammals contains a type of sugar called lactose. Humans produce an enzyme called lactase that helps break down lactose for digestion. Babies have a high level of this enzyme to be able to break down breast milk but as we age we produce less and less of this enzyme. In fact, by adulthood most people do not produce enough lactase to properly digest dairy. This really shows that the body is not really meant to consume dairy into adulthood. This is known as a lactose intolerance and causes a lot of digestive upset. Symptoms include gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, muscle and joint pain, eczema and fatigue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why do I get less digestive upset with cheese or yogurt rather than milk?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cheese (especially aged cheese) has less lactose than milk and therefore is easier to digest for some people. Yogurt is a fermented food. In the fermentation process bacteria is added which causes the conversion of lactose into lactic acid. So yogurt also has less lactose than milk. That process also creates lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose. This makes yogurt easier to digest for some people. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is goat dairy better than cow dairy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With regards to digestion goat milk, cheese, yogurts are easier to digest than cow dairy as the lactose content is lower. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 you to move your body?
That 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 that you can't ignore. The feeling that keeps you coming back time and time again?
I move to 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦. Sometimes I find 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺, like a moving meditation. Sometimes I 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵, sometimes I practically run to my mat.
What 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 come up after you move? Do you feel 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘮 or do you sometimes feel more 𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥?
I remember going to a bootcamp class once and leaving with a 'WTF?!' feeling. Something was 𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘥, lingering at the surface. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing but movement doesn't always leave you feeling like sunshine and roses. That's totally okay, better out than in.
Moving your body is a great tool to 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 and wring out the stuff that weighs you down. Sometimes you'll skip away from the gym/bike/trail/mat and sometimes you'll be gifted with surfaced 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 that needs your attention.
All seriousness aside, nobody tells you how hard it is to do yoga in the sand! Seriously, it took everything inside of me not to fall on my ass.

I’ve never been a fitness person but in recent years I’ve been really trying to get on my game as I’ve embraced wellness as a holistic matter. I‘m going on week 5 with my training at @nikenyc and I’ve never felt better. Forming new habits is so hard but the only way to make working out a consistent part of your life. Learning to actually look forward to physical activity as opposed to thinking of it as a chore to get out of the way has been the biggest shift in my mindset. It’s truly the game-changing key.
