The Temple of Hephaestus
We know a lot about the first formal order of traditional Greek architecture because the Romans wrote about it. We've also got some ruins that we can explore, but these aren't always in the best of condition. It's hard to find really good examples of Greek temples built in the Doric order, so when we find one it's really exciting.
The Temple of Hephaestus (he-FEH-stus) is one such temple. Located near the Agora in Athens, this ancient structure has been incredibly well preserved. It gives us a chance to appreciate some of the first forms of architecture in the Western tradition, which is pretty cool. So, let's check it out.
The Temple of Hephaestus was, we assume, dedicated to the Greek god Hephaestus. No surprises there. But who was Hephaestus? He was the son of Zeus and Hera, and a god of blacksmiths, metallurgy, and craftsmen. He was also the blacksmith of the gods, which was a pretty big job.

  • : It took some effort, but finally I was there in Athens, on the Acropolis where I transported back in time to the world of ancient Greece.
To the golden age of the Athens, the age of Pericles, the wise man.
To the age of Ictinus, the master architect, in front of his marvel, the Parthenon.
To the age of Phidias, the master sculptor, with his gleaming works of art; statue of Zeus, king of the Gods and statue of Athens, Goddess of wisdom.
To the age of Socrates who was determined to accept nothing less than truth.
And to the age of Plato, the author of Republic, the maker of mathematicians.
Athens, the eye of Greece, many of ideas of our today’s world in democracy, philosophy, literature and science owe their origins to you.
Humanity remains indebted to your civilisation.

Also something else interesting: After the battle of Plataea, the Greeks swore never to rebuild their sanctuaries destroyed by the Persians during their invasion of Greece, but to leave them in ruins, as a perpetual reminder of the war. The Athenians directed their funds towards rebuilding their economy and strengthening their influence in the Delian League. When Pericles came to power, he envisioned a grand plan for transforming Athens into the centre of Greek power and culture. And Construction on this Temple started in 449 BCE. Some scholars believe this building not to have been completed for some three decades, funds and workers having been redirected towards the Parthenon. The western frieze was completed between 445–440 BC, while the eastern frieze, the western pediment and several changes in the building's interior are dated by these scholars to 435–430 BC, largely on stylistic grounds. It was only during the Peace of Nicias (421–415 BC) that the roof was completed and the cult images were installed. The temple was officially inaugurated in 416–415 BC. #greece #ancientgreece #greeceancient #ancientgreek #greekancient #greekmythology #mythology #mythologygreek #greeceandrome #camphalfblood #campjupiter #pjo #percyjackson #hoo #heroesofolympus #toa#rickriordan #hellenism #hellenistic #hellenismos #olympianism #dodekatheism #hellenicpolytheism #theoi #Hephaestustemple #ancientgreektemple #hephaestus
