Birthday night whisky number three: Clynelish Distillers Edition.
After a quick bite to eat at Yokato Yakabai Ramen (highly recommended) I made my way across Montreal to the other big whisky bar.
Perusing the list at Burgundy Lion for something unique, and always happy to find a whisky that has been out of production for a while, I excited to see that they still had a bottle of Clynelish Distillers Edition from 2012.
Diageo started the DE bottlings with their six "Classic Malts" in the late 1990's. Clynelish and Coal Ila got DE expressions in 2006 and Royal Lochnager came on board in 2008. But the Distillers Editions of Clynelish and Royal Lochnager were discontinued after 2012.
This is the flagship Clynelish (aged 14 years, with 40% in bourbon barrels and 60% in sherry casks) which has spent roughly another year finishing in Oloroso Seco casks.
It was interesting to see this whisky with more of a sherry influence, though from a dry style of Oloroso.
@highlandparkofficial 12 year single malt scotch
I have to start off with this bottle. It is magnificent. From the viking style scroll work that covers the glass. The traditionally Scottish font, on the heavy black background. What brings it all home is the scotch itself. This glowing amber that makes this glass shine. The way it brings that scroll work to life is outstanding. I can seriously just sit back with a glass of this scotch and admire this bottle for the life of the pour!
The nose has a good balance of peat, honey, citrus, and cream with some slight floral notes. Tastes of jasmine, honey, spices and just the right amount of smoke and peat. The spice stays prevalent through the Finnish.
It pairs really nice with deer jerky. I destroyed about a bound of jerky and a couple pours of this scotch in an embarrassing amount of time.
