  • Hello Instagram, thank you for working again! 👋🏻👋🏻 I have been getting a TON of messages & comments recently asking why I wear a prosthetic, why I don’t have my leg, etc... so I thought I’d make another introductory post about...well me! 😅

My name is Alyssa & I’m a para dressage rider! I was born with a rare condition called Paraxial Tibial Hemimelia which means my right tibia (large lower leg bone) didn’t develop & therefore I couldn’t walk. This happens to about 1 in a million people! CRAZY!
I was born in Ukraine & was adopted at the age of 4 & brought to the US to receive the proper medical care I needed. I had my leg amputated & have been wearing prosthetics ever since!
Now, I live in Rockwall, TX & enjoy each day to the fullest - even if it means I’m just binge watching Netflix! I train at a place nearby & will hopefully be riding 3-4 times a week in the near future & up my training regimen. I have big dreams & am so excited that I get to share them with all of you!
I hope this answered your questions & if you have any questions, I promise I don’t bite - feel free to reach out!
Also, can we take a second to talk about this photo?? Love! I’m also in love with my @americanequus E’lan Dressage stirrups as they have LITERALLY changed the way I ride! No more fonoodling for my stirrup or losing it every couple minutes! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

  • Thoughts with Al: Self Love

When I was a little girl, I remember praying to God & asking him to make my leg grow back. I know, sounds silly, but I was serious & I had faith that it could happen. Obviously, God had other plans & here I am, still with 3/4 limbs 🙃

I think it’s so easy to get wrapped up & think that you’ve got it so hard; I know I definitely have thought that a time or two. It’s not fair. Why don’t I have two legs? Why do I have to go through this? I just always try to remember that someone always has it harder & I try to think about how much I love myself - and not in a conceited “I’m full of myself” kind of way, but in a genuine “I am perfectly & beautifully made” kind of way.
Everyone always comments about how positive I am and I attribute my positivity to my self love. I LOVE not having two legs. I love not having all my fingers (even though I feel like I’m missing a pretty important one 🙄), I love it all because it makes me who I am & there is no one else like me & that is so freaking awesome!
Take the time today to love yourself because you are uniquely you! ✨💕 “We should always love ourselves, instead of loving the idea of other people loving us.”

  • Basking in the sun while it says hello in my @mvmt sunglasses. They’re stylish, fun, & keep the sun out of my eyes while I’m riding. You can use code: ALCEQUINE15 for $15 off your own pair of sunnies 🌞

We had such a great lesson this afternoon & did a run through of our test for our schooling show tomorrow! It’s just training level, nothing fancy & we are slowly working on doing the grade V para test.
I’m honestly, really nervous. My confidence is not there during shows & I could feel it when we were just practicing it! I know that tomorrow is going to be so much fun though & thankful I’m that Tjitte is a seasoned guy & has done this loads of times! Wish us luck! 🔥💕 #jointhemvmt#mvmtforher#mvmtambassador#mvmt @mvmtforher

  • It’s Tuesday & you know what that means...it’s time for #technicaltuesday & today I’m going to answer my most asked question: WHY DON’T I RIDE WITH MY PROSTHETIC?? So, I actually haven’t always ridden without it & I plan to ride with a prosthetic someday hopefully soon! When I was working in KS I rode with my leg every single day & did perfectly well. When I came to TX to train, there was another para there that rode with her leg off & seeing how well she did I decided that I’d give it a try! I ended up loving it & haven’t gone back to riding with my prosthetic since.

As well, my prosthetic is SUPER expensive because of how technologically advanced it is & it’s not something I want to potentially damage - especially now that the warranty has expired.
I have submitted a grant to CAF & upon their approval (🤞🏻) I can get started on making a riding prosthetic to use while I’m in the saddle! It will be lighter, more durable & basically just there to add some weight & allow for some movement to give cues. I have no idea when something like this will be finished, but hopefully by the end of the year!
I honestly think that riding with/without your prosthetic is personal preference! I prefer without just because it makes my life easier at the moment - plus I accidentally threw away the right boot...so there’s that.

  • Good morning all you beautiful people! For today’s #technicaltuesday I wanted to talk about breeches and how/why I have to alter them!
So, if you look closely you’ll see
1) I hand sewed the crotch area cause there was a hole 🤣🤣
2) there’s a zipper that goes along the side of the right leg!
Since I don’t ride with my prosthetic on, I had to figure out a way to be able to take my leg off without completely taking my pants off & showing everyone my bum. I have two types of pants I wear, ones with the leg cut off & ones with the leg still attached (SWIPE)
I like both for different reasons! The ones with the leg cut off are super easy & they show off my prosthetic (hey girl 💁🏼‍♀️), but I’ve had the zippers break due to the constant wear & tear during riding.
The long ones are great for walking around or if I’m running errands after & are a little more discreet & hide my leg, but when I ride you have all that excess material that you have to do something with.
I have never had a problem with types of breeches. I prefer full seat & all the brands I’ve tried have worked so far! I think the only downside is that when I’m buying breeches I have to wait up to a week for them to actually be usable which sucks 🤣🤣 What would you like to see as a #technicaltuesday ?

  • Almost two years ago I started this Instagram account as a way for me to remember this journey. A journey that I thought would be short lived & fairly uninteresting. To my surprise, it has grown & grown far more than I ever expected it to. I can not thank you all enough for allowing me the opportunity to share my life, passions, struggles & dreams with all of you! I’m humbled every single day that any of you choose to follow me & continue to pour out your love & support for me & my sport. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Here’s to 20k & to many more memories down the road! 💕💕

  • All the feels 🥰🥰 I’ve been busy with work and personal life stuff, so I haven’t been to the barn. But, with what happened last weekend I’m ok taking a little break and sorting through my feelings (cause they are valid). On a brighter note, I’ve started watching CHRISTMAS movies now that it’s the Christmas season! We got a Charlie Brown tree cause we’re debating whether or not my cat would destroy a real one 🙄

  • As you can see Daytona is very into stretching! She’s been eating so good with @horse_guard and packing on a little extra for the winter! I stretch her so her armpits are free since her girth has been a little tighter!
We had another awesome lesson! They were doing work on the roof so she got a little spooked, but handled it well! #roofersarescary#stretchingisgoodforthebody

  • I think my smile says it all!

We have our first schooling show on the 16th of March which is SUPER crazy & I’m so lucky that I get to ride Tjitte in it! I’ve been having a blast at our lessons working on shoulder ins, haunches in & meeting all the wonderful people at the new barn!
We also figured out that my stirrups were too short & brought them to the right length! Of course my @americanequus stirrups still don’t move when I’m riding & look as beautiful as ever on my saddle 😍

  • You can’t really tell because of the lighting and angle but sis had a glow up😍
Fun fact: the night before Brownie (titos at the time) arrived at the barn, I had a dream that I was going to try a dark bay OTTB named Trinity that fit almost her exact description. I always wanted to rename her Trinity, but after a while I just got used to Brownie and it felt a bit weird calling her Trinity🙃Hopefully I’ll be able to get some type of content tomorrow but not promises lol

  • Wow is that me riding Brownie?? Haven’t seen that in a while😮
Tbh I’ve been having some confidence/riding issues, which Amelia has helped me out a lot with. The clinic helped a lot and I was able to get on Brownie. I’ve been hiding the unseen issues from everybody with the “perfect” edits and forgotten that nobody’s perfect. I’m honestly a pretty anxious person, and Brownie can be an anxious horse. Amelia has been helping me to not freak out in the bad situations, which is what I tend to do. I guess you could say I’ve been on the #strugglebus .
This ride has definitely given me a lot of hope in our future together. I can’t wait to see where we’ll go :)
End of the long sappy caption lol. Sorry that I plummeted off the face of the earth for a bit🙃

  • So the news is that Mariah has moved!! This has been in the works for a while but weather was in the way🙄She’s now about 15-20 minutes away, compared to 45 minutes away. She’s at our friend’s place, which will hopefully open up some opportunities for me :)
I probably hyped this up too much but we’ve been trying to move her since late last summer, so I’m just excited lol.

  • I promise I’m not dead lol. Weather has been really bad so I haven’t been able to ride, but I’ll be hacking Brownie this week while my trainer’s away at a show🙃
The news about Mariah will *hopefully* be coming tomorrow, as I said the weather’s just been awful so we hadn’t been able to work it out🙃
Also go peep my new videography account with @miw.equine , @fireychestnutvideography if you haven’t already :)

  • So, yesterday I was reading @amypurdygurl insta story & it had a blurb about how someone had asked her how they should talk to a person with a disability & she answered back, “hopefully like a human” & I just want to touch on that in today’s post so buckle up.
I feel like 99% of the time I’m not disabled. Sure, my legs missing & I have surgical steel that keeps my bones together but hey, still not really disabled (as I use my handicap parking at Target cause I don’t feel like walking...😅)
If I’m ever out & about and people see me I usually get stares, kids pointing, asking “why does she have a robot leg”, people going out of their way for me, etc. I feel so often that being disabled is more of a mindset than anything physical. I get tons of questions about my leg whether it’s in person, on Instagram, etc. & I’m totally cool with it cause it’s different & new. I can’t speak for the rest of the disabled community but for me, please ask away cause that’s way better than being stared down like I’m an exhibit in an art museum with the mindset of something is wrong with her. I would love to tell you about my leg & how cool it is! I think that’s why I love riding so much because it’s no longer about me & what I can & can’t do, it’s about the horse & what we can do together. It’s about being independent & it gives me so much freedom & happiness to be able to just hop on & go for a ride. I love this life & wouldn’t want it any other way! I can’t imagine what it must be like to have two legs & I don’t want to! I’m obsessed with my carbon fiber, microprocessor knee & am so lucky that I get to have it. ❤️ #amputee

  • Alright you guys, here’s another addition to #technicaltuesday & I’m low key super excited about it!

One question I get asked a TON is how do I give cues to the horse without having a leg?
In this video you’ll see Tjitte & I working on walk-canter transitions which is something I’ve never done & something he’s done but not with a para. The way I’ve learned to do canter transitions is to use the inside rein & outside leg, however I use a whip on my right side. It can be difficult because the whip doesn’t have as much weight & pressure that my normal leg does & can make it confusing to the horse.
After a few attempts we GOT it! We started with a nice walk, I did a half-halt to get him ready & then placed the whip where my right leg would go & off we went!
Obviously, this took quite a few tries & Tjitte didn’t quite understand what I was asking him at first & that’s totally ok! The environment & training stayed positive & we just kept at it as he has never had someone like me on him asking him to do this!
I think the big takeaway here is that you have to keep trying until you get it! I’ve had some bad experiences with being yelled at because I wasn’t doing it right or right away & I think that seriously killed my confidence with trying new things! Tjitte was a rock star & once he got it he responded to my aid every time!
What would you like to see in the next addition of #techincaltuesday ?

  • If you saw a few weeks ago I touched a little bit on my story as I had just joined @herd.of.zebras with #showyourstripes & today I want to share a bit more! I found this #MondayMemories gem while ransacking my boxes! Being born with Paraxial Tibial Hemimelia, you can see my leg is growing out to the side & I didn’t have a knee. This was pre amputation & I must admit, it’s a little weird to see & think that that was my leg for the first 4 years of my life! WOW.
After I had my amputation I got my first prosthetic & I excelled with it! I finally got to walk, run & play like every other little child for the first time in my life! Growing up I tried every sport out there..soccer, softball, track & field, swimming, biking, volleyball, etc.
I rode horses for the first time when I was about 8 or so & I think that’s when my love for the animal & sport all came about - even though I had been watching movies like Spirit nonstop before then. Looking back, I’d never imagine I’d be where I am today & have the honor of riding the animals I get to & competing in an incredible sport.

  • Tjitte is ridiculously unimpressed with me 🙃

We had such a wonderful ride today! We worked on some things that were a little difficult at first, but he got the hang of it in no time! It’s pretty amazing to think that this guy does so well with me when he’s never had a para on him! 💕

  • Just like people with sensitive skin...horses have very sensitive skin too!! So how can we decrease risks of irritation and decrease ruining your blanket...make a totally unique wash! . . .

It doesn't take much to break out on hives or lose patches of hair! Even this boy is sensitive to clipper blade coolant!! So we've made a wash that is as unique as each and every horse!♥️🐎 . . .

So while detergents and harmful chemicals are removed to preserve waterproofing, removing them has also decreases residues, and decreases risk of skin irritation. All of our washes are considered sensitive! No matter the size of the horse, they are all gentle and delicate in their own way! 🤗 . . .

  • To learn something new...you can accept it, or fight it. This sweet 2 year old just accepts it...because I think he loves 1:1 attention. .

So teach me something new. What is your favorite horse related podcast or magazine! Tag then below, or just type it in...im curious! I grew up and had stacks and stacks of horse illistrated magazines, horse and rider, and several more..., but do people even get magazines any more? Thoughts? .
