Our 29th day together started with a 20 minute trot/canter workout to help with the swelling. Something I really dislike doing, because making a horse go round in circles with just the purpose of physical exercise makes really no sense to me and it was a huge ‘make’. He just had to do it, vet’s orders. I thought that after such a start he would hate me but luckily he didn’t...
After those 20 minutes I decided to do something with the tarp. He has seen it once before but couldn’t really bother because yeah.. first time for him with horses next to him in a paddock. I just put the tarp down and sat on it. That’s all I did. And I waited. He walked around and around and around.. sniff sniff.. walk walk, until.. after about 10 minutes or so, he really wanted to be closer to me so he stepped on it and we did a mutual grooming session 😂😅
After that I wanted to see if I could touch him with it. It might seem like he just basically accepts everything, but you actually have to be really careful. Sudden or fast movements and high energy make him nervous. So obvisouly I don’t just throw the tarp on him. I let him snif it first, see if I can touch it with him and ‘release’. And with all the right releases, I can gradually build up to what you see in the video. It took 15 minutes from first touch to what you see on the video.
A few years ago I was really into desentisizing.. as in doing these things until I have ‘full relaxation’ and no more respons. I no longer am. I don’t want a horse that learns to just take it because it won’t go away until you just stand there. I want him to trust me and that’s it. He can still respond or be a little tense or whatever, he is a horse! That’s his nature.. as long as he doesn’t run away and he is still present and slightly relaxed I am more than okay and move on. Because in the end.. it is not about the tarp. Or the saddle or the flag or the jump or the halter.. it is about partnership and trust.
