  • Two years ago, I spent my summer interning in New York at BuzzFeed. Last summer, interning in Atlanta at CNN. And this summer, iA I will be moving to Spain for a month to study Spanish. It’s insane where life takes you, and sure, we all want to have some idea of where our futures will lead us, but sometimes the thrill is in not knowing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Three years ago, I was a freshman engineering major sitting outside my dorm room in the middle of the night crying to my mother to tell her I just couldn’t do it anymore. I didn’t like my major, I hated where I was living and attending college, and I just wanted to move back home to start over. At that point in my life, I disappointed a lot of people, was the topic of gossip among the engineer uncles at daawats, and wasn’t a hundred percent sure what I wanted to do with my life. But I chose to be selfish with my happiness for once.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I didn’t completely know what my purpose was while I put it all on the line, but it sure as hell wasn’t engineering. Do I still know for certainty what that purpose is? Not really, but that’s okay. The more I explore, travel, learn, and meet new people, my “life plan” (damn, I really am brown) that I perceived to be set in stone, shifts contiguously as I consider new opportunities — as it should. If traveling and learning doesn’t change your mindset in some way, there’s definitely something wrong.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Say it with me: “I AM ENOUGH. I AM GOING TO ACCOMPLISH AMAZING THINGS. NOTHING IN LIFE IS PERMANENT AND I WILL BE OPEN TO THE OPPORTUNITIES LIFE BRINGS ME.” As Kris Jenner would say, you’re doing amazing, sweetie.

  • Let’s be real for a second. Behind the glitz and glamour of social media, no one’s life is perfect and no one is as flawless as they make themselves seem (unless you’re Beyoncé). It can be hard seeing people doing amazing things in life and traveling all the time. You may genuinely be happy for them, but there’s still that tiny part of you that questions where you are in life, and I’m guilty of this too. Your mental health is important, and it’s totally normal to take a break from social media if you need the cleanse. Take what you see online with a grain of salt, and remember that everyone’s timeline is different. You don’t know how hard and how many years someone has worked behind the scenes to get to where they are now. You too shall attain greatness iA, and when you do, it will be spectacular

  • behind every successful woman is an unlimited supply of covfefe. today, i planned to do soo many things but only got half of them done. of course, i’m proud of the little victories, but there’s more hustling to do before ending the night. it’s only 10 pm and i’m already a little dead inside, so i’ll be needing more of that joe por favor. bottoms up ☕️
//
P.S. this jumpsuit from @sheinofficial literally tore apart all over my back and arms the first day i wore it 😭😭 peep that hole by my elbow. don’t make the same mistake of buying something cute from them even if it has no reviews!

  • still can’t believe i spent my last eid in spain and morocco// fun story: when we were at the hercules caves in tangier, henna artists were chasing down noticeably foreign folks and applying henna on their hands (with syringes!) without their consent. their trick was to act like they were doing the tourists a favor by drawing a tiny design, and after, charging them with high prices. my friend julia ended up forcibly getting her name written in arabic by one of them, and when she showed it to me later, i translated it to “jakulia” 😂. so when we went to the blue city days later, we found a nicer henna artist with a little booth who helped her do a henna “tattoo cover up” 😂

  • home is where the heart is// my canada trip meant so much to me, not just because of all the natural beauty i witnessed. but also, because i got to see my family. growing up, i never had the big family parties, eids or even birthdays because it was always just my parents and my little sister. no extended family in texas whatsoever, hardly even in america. it was nice, because that’s all i knew, but i couldn’t help but feel envious at my friends who had camping trips with their eight cousins or playdates with their nephews. however, the times i do get to visit my moms brothers in canada, it’s always such a joy being in a home filled with laughter and this many people enjoying each other’s company over chai (pretty sure it’s an addiction by now) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
but what warms my heart the most is this cute little addition to the family, my new baby cousin. i’ve never been a kid person. like AT ALL. let’s be real, i like almost four kids i’ve ever met in my entire life, and most of them aren’t my relatives 👀 but something about this little 2-month-old human caught me off guard and got me feeling all sorts of ways. most of the times his parents couldn’t get him to stop crying, i’d take him, and within seconds, he’d be completely at ease, enough to smile a little and fall asleep. like to the point where it became a running joke that i had a “magic touch” or i was a “baby whisperer.” it was the strangest thing i’d ever seen and felt. since returning home today, i’ve felt nothing but sadness (basically been crying in the club over this kid who will forget me the second he wakes from his nap 😂), mainly because I’ll probably miss seeing this angel grow up unless i visit more frequently. iA, it’s going to be a priority from now. here’s a couple of my favorite videos of Asad from this trip ♥️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
p.s. i swear he loves me, he was just a cranky lil smurf on eid
