  • Happy Tuesday!
How is November treating you? I fell in love with nature🍁🍂🌲 this morning. Everything looked so beautiful. You might have seen some pics in my stories today, I couldn’t stop taking photos while walking home.

Last week was Living Wage Week. Alongside @livingwagefoundation @vintagebooks are campaigning for companies to pay the living wage in the UK, as many of them currently don’t. Amongst these are the biggest bookshop chain 👹 in the UK.

Now We Have Your Attention by #jackshenker makes sense of what is happening in British politics by taking the people’s perspective, and especially those people who have lost out. The chapters cover different areas of the Uk - London, Brighton, Newcastle, Essex, Manchester and more. It’s an emotionally draining read. It’s quite depressing to read how the country is falling to pieces, and looking less and less after its weakest ones.

  • What does it mean to be a woman filmmaker in India? One famous director suffered from depression, unable to take on film projects because of her young child. Another was asked in an interview if she drinks and smokes to deal with the stress of filmmaking like men do. Some faced cinematographers who refused to listen to them.⠀
⠀
Almost all of them struggle to raise money for films with female protagonists. But they are also cool and sassy. One attended film-school with her two-week-old baby. Another stormed the once all-male bastion of the 200-crore club. They can make a hit film about a middle-aged housewife, as much as a bisexual teenager with a disability.⠀
⠀
F-rated brings together diverse stories of eleven women filmmakers in India: Aparna Sen, Mira Nair, Farah Khan, Meghna Gulzar, Nandita Das, Shonali Bose, Tanuja Chandra, Anjali Menon, Reema Kagti, Kiran Rao and Alankrita Srivastava. A celebration of their womanhood as much as their work - this is a must-read.⠀

Kate Bullion’s chance to surprise her grandmother for the holidays goes awry when, instead of Gran, she comes face-to-face with twins Rance and Troy Keekoti, her childhood best friends. They’ve grown up into two very sexy men, but pain from their past still stings Kate.

Rance and Troy have never forgotten Kate--the girl of their dreams, now a woman they crave to possess. Yet tribal law prevents them from coming clean with her about their true nature as shifters. They can’t resist being near her, though, no matter what the risk.

Kate bakes some of Gran’s famous cookies for Rance and Troy, but what none of them know is that one of the ingredients magically lowers inhibitions in humans. In the twins, it unleashes primal urges that scorch her to the core.

  • Based on a true incident, Morrison's Beloved is an extremely unsettling story of slavery, tragedy, horror, and mental collapse. Sethe, the unstable, unlovable, and incurable wreck of a woman around whom the story revolves, loses memory of misdeeds committed by herself and against her. The story starts off with her house being haunted by her first baby girl's ghost. Her mother-in-law dies wistful, her two sons flee the house at the age of 13, her youngest daughter Denver refuses to leave the house. The story picks up when Paul D, who worked with her as a slave in Sweet Home alongside her husband, comes to town and established himself as the man of the house without any context of what had happened to Sethe and her family in the years after escape from slavery. This eases the afflicting twinge and restlessness of Sethe a bit, but things take a weird turn when this family-of-sorts admits a strange girl into the house called Beloved.
.
'Anything dead coming back to life hurts'
While Paul D's return gives Sethe the re-memory of slavery, Beloved's presence yanks at her bygone crime. As she 'remembers something she forgot she knew', she starts coming unglued, and the house turns eerie and dysfunctional by the day. Paul D has a more cathartic relationship with his untoward past as he piles it away in his tobacco tin heart.
.
'...white could take your whole self for anything that came to mind. Not just work, kill, or maim you, but dirty you. Dirty you so bad you couldn't like yourself anymore. Dirty yourself to bad you forgot who you were and couldn't think it up.'
The whole tale is about the impact of slavery. For Sethe, it begins with the whites at Sweet Home who brutalize her, which pushes her to crime, hence turning into a slave of her past.
.
'Don't fall asleep when she braids your hair'
The story is laden with chilling moments and you never quite understand who or what the problem is.
.
The writing style was difficult to discern initially and then you get used to it. Most of the narrative was a drag, but the last twenty pages were terrific as they culminated with context, consolation, and closure.

  • I liked this sequel but sadly it wasn’t as good as the first one! (But then again, how often is a sequel as good as the original??) This book was all over the place 😂 introducing tons of new people, places, designer names, family ties, etc etc. I couldn’t keep track of them all and after a while just rolled with it and enjoyed the story lol. I was surprised by how little the plot focused on Rachel/Nick - instead of being the main attraction, their story is one of several throughout the book. Absolute favourite chapter was the notes Corinna sent Kitty about how to be more high-class 🤣
-
Something that REALLY annoys me about both books though is how there’s always 1-2 women who turn into shrieking bitches over some dumb plot point about social status/prestige/reputation/etc. In CRA it was Eleanor, in this book it’s Mrs. Bao and Colette. It’s sooo not a look and I hate this stereotype that Chinese women are ready to go off anytime. Why is it never one of the men, who are invariably all calm and collected?!

  • Hace unos días leí “Una Buena Chica” y me gustó bastante! Realmente no me esperaba todos los giros que dio la trama, y sobre todo el final. Me gustaron los personajes y creo que la autora hizo un muy buen trabajo al crearlos, todos muy diferentes y realistas. #TheGoodGirl

  • The conclusion of the Shades of Magic trilogy! 🔺 It’s so hard to review this series individually, as it can give so much away, so this will be short at sweet! This series overall is so much fun. The characters are all so unique and powerful. It really has a lot of surprising directions, and the connections between the four Londons is well thought out. Nothing is worse than a multi-layered world that has plot holes 🙅🏻‍♀️ •

I’m really happy with how this book ends! Get ready for EMOTIONS. And the romance is the perfect amount with a plot this complicated. There’s still a story to tell and read with romance sprinkled in, instead of the romance being the main plot. Overall I liked this book the most in the series, it was a strong finish! ✨

Book Pictured: A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab 🌟: 5/5

Synopsis:

As darkness sweeps the Maresh Empire, the once precarious balance of power among the four Londons has reached its breaking point.

In the wake of tragedy, Kell―once assumed to be the last surviving Antari―begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. Lila Bard, once a commonplace―but never common―thief, has survived and flourished through a series of magical trials. But now she must learn to control the magic, before it bleeds her dry.

An ancient enemy returns to claim a city while a fallen hero tries to save a kingdom in decay. Meanwhile, the disgraced Captain Alucard Emery of the Night Spire collects his crew, attempting a race against time to acquire the impossible.
