  • I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to buy new saris for Durga Puja. For a quintessential Bengali, the joy of wearing new clothes on those five days, is unparalleled. I decided to go for a more sustainable option instead, and in that process save some moolah as well! I thought of borrowing and reusing my mother's treasured saris. Traditional, close to the roots and smelling of nostalgia.
First day of the festival was a working day for me and I opted for this red-and-white (yay to Bengali stereotype!) Dhakai, a handwoven sari with one of the most ancient, traditional and finest forms of weaving which originated in Bangladesh (erstwhile undivided Bengal). This time and labour intensive weft technique of Jamdani (Dhakai Jamdani) was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

It felt light and was easy to move around in. But more than anything else, I was happy that I could breathe new life into the sari, bring a smile on maa's face and soak in the festivities just the way I had wanted to.
