Of the many things that I like about Bengal, Durga Puja is probably at the top of the list. Watching the beautifully decorated puja pandals, the Dhunuchi Nach, the Sindoor Khela and the Jokara in movies and TV serials is what attracted me to the festival. The bengali women dressed in their quintessential red and white sarees holding dhunuchi (incense burners) in their hands and dancing to the rhythmic hits of the Dhak, becoming ever more frenzied with every beat look so elegant, fierce and beautiful. I had always wanted to dress up like them. Ronak, my brother, who is well aware of my love for all things Bengal, got this gorgeous handloom bengali saree for me from Kolkata and it's only fitting that I wear it today on the day of Vijayadashami.
Vijayadashami, in eastern parts of India, is celebrated as the day marking goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, while in western parts of the country it celebrates Bhagwan Rama's victory of Ravana, both essentially depicting the victory of good (dharma) over evil (adharma). Happy Vijayadashami to all!
