  • The Amber Fort, a hybrid of Hindu and Islamic architecture decked out in sandstone and marble, is one of a thousand reasons to love Jaipur. (Two more of those reasons: pure Bollywood theatricality at the Raj Mandir, iced cream coffees + mutton dosas at 19th-century cafes complete with framed portraits of Mahatma Gandhi.) ✵

In a month and change, I’m bound for a lahmajoun / khachapuri / naan slice of the Middle East, Caucasus, and South Asia — all regions with which I am completely unfamiliar save for India (where I’ll be undergoing a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh). It’s good to be back on the road solo, drafting half-baked itineraries (so maybe this caption is analogously bread-heavy, but who’s complaining?) and traversing lands by camel and marshrutka. Unfamiliarity, discomfiting though it may be, is exactly why I love going at it alone, or for that matter, at all.

To me, solo travel isn't really a declaration of independence, but rather its opposite — the acknowledgement that the fruits of any fundamental human experience are based in community. Conversations with a waiter on a slow night. Impromptu language lessons in an Uber. Enlisting the help of someone at a crowded bus terminal. Whatever it is, you see the heightened value in every interaction, on which your movement and understanding wholly depend. And in being at the mercy of travel kismet you render yourself totally vulnerable and honest, susceptible to every plan-derailing discomfort and spontaneous kinship. Life, for better or worse, as it's all un-meant to be.
