At night, by the fire,
The colors of the bushes
And of the fallen leaves,
Repeating themselves,
Turned in the room,
Like the leaves themselves
Turning in the wind.
Yes: but the color of the heavy hemlocks
Came striding.
And I remembered the cry of the peacocks.
-
The colors of their tails
Were like the leaves themselves
Turning in the wind,
In the twilight wind.
They swept over the room,
Just as they flew from the boughs of the hemlocks
Down to the ground.
I heard them cry – the peacocks.
Was it a cry against the twilight
Or against the leaves themselves
Turning in the wind,
Turning as the flames
Turned in the fire,
Turning as the tails of the peacocks
Turned in the loud fire,
Loud as the hemlocks
Full of the cry of the peacocks?
Or was it a cry against the hemlocks?
-
Out of the window,
I saw how the planets gathered
Like the leaves themselves
Turning in the wind.
I saw how the night came,
Came striding like the color of the heavy hemlocks.
I felt afraid.
And I remembered the cry of the peacocks.

Studying every #joanmitchell mark. Wondering what her studio was like when she dug into those canvases with that cobalt. Watching how she let gravity make dripmarks long enough to stay interesting, but manipulated enough to keep my attention. The negative space lets her colors dance and I’m in awe of how the two side panels have a way of hugging the center composition. Bold, aggressive, weird, & badass.

  • Despite the title 'Rhubarb', Joan Mitchell claimed that her paintings are not intended to be representational.⠀
.⠀
‘I would rather leave nature to itself,’ she once said. ‘It is quite beautiful enough as it is. I certainly never mirror it. I would like more to paint what it leaves me with.’⠀
.⠀
Joan Mitchell (1925–1992), 'Rhubarb', 1962. Estimate: £3,200,000-3,800,000.⠀
.⠀
Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction – 4 October at Christie’s London.⠀

  • Seen: Absolutely floored by this beautiful #JoanMitchell painting. Got to see it up close and in person as it was undergoing meticulous conservation @dallasmuseumart. Check the vibrancy of the paint and brushstrokes. Note the smaller painting (also by Mitchell) propped up next to it. It was done 25 years prior. #oiloncanvas #dallasmuseumofart

  • Do what you want, 10x10” mixed media on wood.

There’s so much swirling inside. Thoughts on freedom and shame. Thoughts on how fear will have you believing that everybody knows what’s happening but you. Shame will have you faking like you know too...Faking like you aren’t at all vulnerable, from fear of being exposed as less than. But there is freedom and liberation in being vulnerable. That’s just true.

Also playing with repetition and I’m so smitten with writing little notes on pieces right now and really just doing what I want. 💕
