  • "...And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds are immune to your consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going through..." - David Bowie

I love coming-of-age films. They're simple, heartwarming and relatable. Sadly, they don't make them like they used to in the old days anymore.
Here's a list of 5 quintessential coming-of-age teen films from the '70s, '80s and '90s that make me want to be a teenager in those times-
•The Breakfast Club (1985) by John Hughes
•Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) by John Hughes
•American Graffiti (1973) by George Lucas
•Dazed and Confused (1993) by Richard Linklater
•Empire Records (1995) by Allan Moyle

The interesting thing about these films (except that they're among my favourites) is that each one of them is set within a span of one day/24 hours or less.
Although the lives of teenagers have drastically changed these days, these films continue to have a cult following till this date.
I highly recommend it to everyone who wants a taste of nostalgia.

  • The Breakfast Club (1985)
RATING: 4/5
Director: John Hughes
Starring: Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy

The Breakfast Club is about 5 students from different high school social groups that find themselves in detention on a Saturday. They are forced to spend the day together and naturally, they interact. This movie is 35 years old and yet still feels very much relevant in today's high school scene. I loved all of the performances, the cast was great in this movie. Especially Judd Nelson who does a great job as the "bad boy". The cinematography is quite simple almost the entire movie takes place in the school. What I like about this movie are the messages that it communicates. Whilst all of these five high schoolers are meant to be vastly different and from different "worlds", they are all forced to interact with each other for the first time and in doing so discover that they have more in common than they thought, that perhaps the different stereotypes they had didn't necessarily describe the full complexity of the person they were and that their problems more or less boiled down to very similar things. The soundtrack is also pretty good. Having said that, the movie is quite simple and might be a little too old for some people's taste. Overall, a great, fun, light experience for anyone. This movie is great for any chill situation and will be relatable to many.

  • Pretty in Pink (1986) 🌸
PLOT: A poor girl must choose between the affections of dating her childhood sweetheart or a rich but sensitive playboy.
/
FUN FACT: The filmmakers wanted Blane, to be "a hunky, square-jawed jock," but Molly Ringwald wasn't attracted to that sort of guy. Ringwald had some say in the casting, and after Andrew McCarthy auditioned, she told John Hughes and Howard Deutch her thoughts on him. "That's the kind of guy I would fall in love with." They thought he was a "twerpy guy", and weren't interested, but Ringwald pushed for his casting.

  • It's been 35 years since this iconic movie graced the screens. I love this film more than words could ever describe.

This group of flawed individuals trying to find their place within the world and peace within themselves continues to stand the test of time.

Perhaps it's because deep down each one of us is a brain, an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.

I'm sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club. 📷 @seamstess & @kp_cosplay

  • Right now, my belated heavenly birthday wish goes out to 1980s film director who would've turned 70 yesterday. John Hughes was a filmmaker. Beginning as an author of humorous essays and stories for National Lampoon, he went on to write, produce, and sometimes direct some of the most successful live-action comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s such as National Lampoon's Vacation and its sequels European Vacation and Christmas Vacation, Mr. Mom, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, Uncle Buck, Dutch, Dennis the Menace, Miracle on 34th Street, the Beethoven franchise (co-written under a pseudonym with Amy Holden-Jones) and Home Alone and its sequels Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Home Alone 3. Most of Hughes’ work is set in the Chicago metropolitan area. He is best known for his coming-of-age teen comedy films which often combined magic realism with honest depictions of suburban teenage life. Many of his most enduring characters from these years were written for Molly Ringwald, who was Hughes’ muse. .
While out on a walk one morning in New York in the Summer of Aug. 6, 2009, John Hughes suffered a fatal heart attack at age 59. His legacy after his death was honored by many, including at the 82nd Academy Awards by actors with whom he had worked with such Matthew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, and Macaulay Culkin among others. Actors whose careers Hughes helped launch include Michael Keaton, Hall, Bill Paxton, Broderick, Culkin and members of the Brat Pack group. .
