Maker’s Mark Private Select for Harvey Nichols
The Harvey Nichols Private Select Bourbon Whiskey is the first-ever UK release from the Maker’s Mark single barrel programme
Harvey Nichols has taken a nearly seven year old cask full of Maker’s Mark’s and inserted into it ten oak staves carefully selected for what they will bring to the flavour profile, and matured it for a further nine weeks. Tasting notes of sauternes-soaked raisins, crunchy-topped crème brûlée, maple syrup drizzled on pancakes, pink peppercorns, dusty spices, apricot jam on toast, pecan and apple pie, Nutella and a wonderment of wood aromas
The Ten stave ‘recipe’ they decided on consists of:
- 1 Baked American Pure 2 stave to enhance the sweet brown sugar flavours
- 1 Seared French Cuvée stave whose ruffled surface heighten honey-roasted almond nuances
- 3 Roasted French Mocha staves that develop chocolaty notes
- 2 Toasted French Spice adding cinnamon and smoke, and finally - 3 staves of the kind used to create Maker’s 46
🍶 tasting some new references to add to the #Kanpai range, including our first namazake produced by Amabuki, and a crisp Junmai Daiginjo produced in Fukushima prefecture that is just fantastic, and amazing value to boot! Come and taste it at Antwerpen Proeft next week I’d say!Incidentally, Riedel’s rosé champagne glass may be my new favourite way to enjoy Daiginjo sake, really capturing the aromas while bringing focus on the palate, perfect if you don’t want to splurge on specific glassware.
A free afternoon in London and a stop off at Milroys to meet @jb_tlwc and collect my @londonwhiskyclub coin (and drop off some West Country bottles). I went for a dram of this limited edition @tobermorydistillery 12Yr Fino Cask finish, released to mark the re-opening of the distillery after its two year refurbishment.
This shouldn’t be confused with the new standard 12Yr bottling with the green foil which is an all ex-bourbon affair (and half the price). Despite my love of Ledaig I’m not the biggest fan of Tobermory, but had heard good things and am partial to a good Fino cask when done right.
Tobermory 12Yr (Fino Finish) - 55.1% ABV
Nose - salted cashews, Bacon Frazzles, nougat, toffee drizzle, baked orange, whiff of sulphur and glazed mackerel skin
Palate - sticky honey dipping sauce, coconut and vanilla popcorn, chewy tannic notes with mocha and sultanas. Water brings out cherry cola and honeydew melon
It’s often asked how Tobermory and Ledaig are so far apart considering they’re the same distillate bar the peat. Well, this is more like an unpeated Ledaig, with coastal meatiness aplenty but with a refined edge from the Fino. If the new look Tobermory continues in this vein then sign me up. Certainly the high ABV gives this dram a bit of much appreciated volume. .
Without sounding like a broken record, the one downside is the price, £100 for a 12Yr is expensive, especially considering Tobermory’s usual price point (I’ve got cask strength Ledaigs older than this that were around £80). However, it’s a very drinkable whisky and another hit for Distill. Whatever they’re doing at all three of their Scottish Distilleries is clearly working.

I'm enjoying this new @aberlour Casg Annamh release! That being said, I do miss finding A'bunadh on the shelf at reasonable prices. I'm happy they decided to keep the ABV higher at 48% as well. Suggested retail is $70 (US). Has anyone else tried this yet?
