  • Remind yourself every morning, three things you are Grateful for..! I’m Grateful for a strong worth ethic my mother taught me and the ability of self reliance this has given me. I’m also Grateful for my kids and the carefree fun loving experiences they bring to my life! And it’s true, your brain just needs to be reminded daily of how effing awesome you are to block out the negative murmur 💆🏽‍♀️📔🤓

It’s not easy keeping our heart open when we are upset with our partner.
It can feel deeply counterintuitive.
.
.
Here are some of the phrases I often coach my clients to vocalize when they are upset with their partner:
“It’s okay that I get upset with you.”
“It’s okay that I get hurt sometimes.”
“I still love you even if I feel hurt by you.”
.
.
To me, naming it in this way gives us space to be both (hurt) and (loving).
Some people grew up with parents who punished them for getting angry .. so even the slight show of anger in their partner can set them off.
Some people grew up with parents who gave them the silent treatment whenever they made small mistakes .. so they go into terror fearing that disconnection is about to last for an unknown and unbearable amount of time.
.
.
On the surface, it’s easy to make up the story that our partner should be okay with us getting upset from time to time.
And don’t get me wrong .. this is a highly essential and (necessary) relationship skill that we (all) need to learn.
.
.
But I think it’s equally essential to take the time to learn about our partner’s history.
To learn about how people showed (upsets) to them in their past.
Whether that be their parents or past partners.
.
.
Small moments of understanding in this way can help us when our partner’s face gets (frozen) .. or when they (shut down) so quickly when we appear angry.
.
.
That understanding can help us expand the tolerance on (both) sides.
Both our willingness to adjust our expression of feelings to help our partner feel safer .. and our partner’s ability to expand their comfort level to fully let us feel our moments of pain and discomfort.

  • "So now I get to practice. And I don’t mind as much. But dealing with conflict is a *relationship skill*: we’re gonna need that when we grow up!
.
Maybe we could raise kids not to spend so much time mindlessly obeying adults. At home. In school. Etc. ❤️
.
We could make space for kids to practice how and when to assert themselves."

All those $5 coffees and $10 kids toy purchases are adding up without you realising 😱 it is not until we sit down and add them up do we know the full story and realise how much we could be saving 💰
Two quick ways to do a spending check

1. Grab a piece of paper and your bank statement write down all your expected expenses for the next month in order that they will come out so each week you can plan ahead 🙌

2. Give yourself a spending allowance in Cash 💵 only nothing like handing over cash to make you think about what you are purchasing 🤔

Time to start making those money mindset changes to achieve your 2019 money goals because we are already at the end of April 😳

  • Flip, I love these two.

Kenzie starts school on Monday and it's got me feeling all kinds of proud and lucky. I am going to be able to drop her at school every morning for the next wee while and I feel super, duper privileged to be able to spend each morning helping her get ready and settled in to her day 🍎

On another note - this has pretty much been me for the last week with my sicky babe. She's finally all better now - thank you if you messaged me to check in! It was some weird infection that her body ended up beating on its own: the noon til 9pm sleep on Tuesday probably helped with that 🌙✨

This picture doesn’t say much but behind this picture I have a child that has never ending energy, I have a child that needs to be on my boob to get to sleep and all throughout the night literally 24/7, there is a child that behaves for everyone out in public except for his mama. But today was an exception Jai was an absolute angel he conquered his fear of swings and we shared a cheeky kiss mid swing. Gosh I love him 😍 📸: @jasminehowatson

  • This girl was 24. This girl was lost. She had no idea who she was or what she was doing. She had a loving partner but something was still missing. She wanted so desperately to be loved and have the void filled. She was a party girl, and boy she partied hard. She thought she was unattractive and hated her body. She was a nasty person who only thought about herself and what she wanted. With no care for who she hurt or what she said.
Fast track to 6 years later and this girl has finally learned to love herself, her body, her life. She has learned to keep her mouth shut and keep unnecessary opinions and thoughts at bay....mostly. She has learned that love conquers more than hate.
She has learned to help herself. She now has a full heart and a full home. She found her reason for living when she had children. She learned that giving to others is more rewarding than giving to yourself. She found that there is a love that is bigger and more powerful than any love she had felt before. She is still learning so much. She is still finding herself. But she is finally is a place where she can say she is truly happy.

She is me.

  • STOP!
Are you new here? Kia ora. Welcome. I've had a massive influx of new people arrive this week so I thought I better tell you a bit about me so you know who it is you've decided to Insta-stalk #inanotcreepyway ❤ People call me Em. I'm a Leo, 5" something and have vague memories of enjoying long walks on the beach, but now I have kids. ❤ Born in Northland, raised in Horeke, in 7th Form I went to school by K'rd and bunked and smoked like a basass cause I liked to think I was a badass, but now I have kids. ❤ I used to read lots of books, but now I have kids. ❤ I used to travel to exotic places for work, but now I have kids. ❤ I used to wear high heels and drive fast cars and have sexy time with AJ, but now I have kids.
So what do I do now that I have kids? ❤ Well I kinda started a blog and people liked reading about my kids. ❤ And they liked reading about the baby carriers that I used to carry the kids. ❤ And the cloth nappies that I used to nappy the kids. ❤ And other stuff about the kids. ❤ Somewhere along the way I started talking about periods and now I have a menstrual cup in my image and that's not cause of the kids, it's cause I have a vagina, that having a vagina did help me have kids so I guess it counts. ❤ And that about sums it up 👌

  • What’s your ‘go to’ dish when life feels hard? My priorities are always - high in flavour, low in dishes and if time is a factor - quick! This dish is all of these thing & in my newsletter tomorrow - Quick Green Thai Curried Fish. 😋

To stay true to my #reallife image I want to portray, today, if I’m honest, was pretty rough. Not for any particular reason (Campbell was home today so I don’t know what made today the hard day this week...?) but it was just one of those days where everything felt too hard. I started spiraling into overwhelm - mostly from lack of sleep and lack of introvert time. Don’t get me wrong, I love people around me but with Reuben being in my arms day and night this past week, I’ve hardly had a moment to take a breath. It’s got me thinking a lot about motherhood... life so quickly jumps from good, to hard, to crying your eyes out, to staring in wonder at your children, from savouring the baby asleep in your arms to wishing they were in anybody else’s arms, to missing your children and then also hanging out for a break from them. I have been trying to find a pattern. To somehow better prepare for days or weeks like this one but these tiny humans seem to throw curve balls at you that make life so unpredictable. They can do something they really shouldn’t have and yet you find yourself in fits of laughter and reasoning in the great scheme of things it’s really not that big of a deal, and then other days they’ll put their toe over the line and out emerges a beast, overreacting and emotional. As I sit here, typing this, I am in the pitch black of Reubens room. He’s asleep on me but I’m just waiting for him to be really asleep. All day I have been waiting for this moment - all three kids asleep. Sitting here, typing all of this, holding back tears all day and trying to hold myself together through the exhaustion, I find myself thinking, No... it wasn’t that bad. We’re ok. I’m ok.’ Weird... totally weird. I guess, getting back to my original point, as far as an observation, all that I can conclude is motherhood is love. LOVE. You give more than you know you have to give and even on days like today when you’re feeling empty, love prevails, always.

⁣
Now I know most of us know how to apply by now, but for anybody thats new to my page or is having issues with longevity of your colour, then this is for you!⁣
⁣
Do’s:⁣
⁣
- Clean and dry your lips⁣
- Shake tube WELL⁣
- Apply 3 THIN coats in the same direction⁣
- Let each coat dry for 10 seconds before adding the next layer⁣
- Seal with glossy gloss to hydrate and protect colour⁣
- Use remover to tidy up any mistakes⁣
⁣
Don’ts :⁣
⁣
- Lick your lips before applying⁣
- Apply thick layers⁣
- Swipe wand back and forth like conventional lipsticks. This will create a patchy look⁣
- Touch lips together until glossy gloss is applied⁣
- Apply gloss until colour is fully dry. Wand should remain clean. ⁣
- Use another brand of gloss. They will strip the colour⁣

I am grateful for being able to notice my negative thinking. You can’t change what you can’t see.
.
I am grateful for feeling like I’m never enough. It makes it so easy for me to lift others up because the reality is, everyone is enough.
.
I am grateful for my anxiety. It means I can easily tell when someone else is feeling the same.
.
I am grateful for my brain. How else would I have managed so much academic study with so much success.
.
I am grateful for everyone who has every criticised me. It means I am aware how much words can hurt.

  • M U M A | I remember when I had Mila, I was still a baby myself. I was worried about what everyone thought, if I was doing anything right and if I was even cut out to be a Mum. I can safely say that six and a half years later and I am so proud of who this little girl has made me. She has taught me patience, unconditional love and what it really takes to really be a Mum. Becoming a Mum for a second time has been made so much easier because of her as she set the way and taught me everything I need to know, I’m at ease, I’m more patient and my heart is the fullest it’s ever been 💫

  • We spent the morning playing with our friends border collie, had breakfast at the waterfront, watched the fighter plane go past and saw heaps of cute dogs and discussed what good boys they were. All in all just a really great morning. Off to an Anzac sunset service soon for as long as Pops will be quiet for...so probs about 2 minutes.
Fun fact: Wills in this picture. Can you spot him?

  • It's been a month since my last @sweat session and boy did I struggle today 🤦‍♀️ pre-study commitments I was getting to a good place with my fitness, I was enjoying the programme, I felt good and I was beginning to see a change in my body as well as feel it; I felt lifted by prioritising myself for a change 🌻
Today, I am right back at the beginning. But that's ok. Silver linings. I get to start again with more meaningful motivations 🖤 Like so many other wahine, I have struggled with body image and self-esteem for a lot of my life. Those toxic messages I internalised in my teens got stronger after the birth of our last kiddo and I dealt with it in an unhealthy and self-destructive way. When I started making a concerted effort to exercise it was aesthetically motivated - I wanted to lose weight. It's taken a lot of intentional reflection to realise that's just not going to keep me motivated. But I got there 🍃
It's taken me a lot to realise that the number on the scale is nothing more than a comment about my relationship with gravity. Its says absolutely nothing about how I feel, or what I am capable of. So here's to embarking on a journey with the right motivations.
Goal Weight: Happy, Healthy & StrongAF 👌🤸‍♀️

As the weather gets colder, soup is on the menu! Soup is so much better when it’s all homemade, including the vegetable stock! 🍜
This homemade stock paste uses so many vegetables and is versatile so you can add what you’ve got. 🥕 🍅

  • I am extremely passionate about gentle parenting. I have a great inspirational community online. I read articles, tips advice almost every day. It's safe to say 'I (should) know better.' And still I don't always 'do better.' Some days putting all the theory into practice can be effortless. Some days it's a struggle at ever step. And the days of struggle are definitely more than the effortless days.

And although on the days I feel off I am inclined to doubt myself and sometimes even end up feeling like a 'gentle parenting fraud' , I have come to recognize that my moments of struggle do not define me. Even the best of us struggle , it's what makes us human.

I am doing the best I can.
The same way I know my little is doing the best he can even when it all seems daunting.
Here's hoping I keep showing the same grace and consideration towards everyone in my life. 💛🌻 #thegentlemammawrites .

These hand drawn poppies are also in my stories as a free phone screensaver, so check it out ✌️ We will remember them. #ANZAC #lestweforget #themumhustle
