  • The legendary Prawn cutlet which is cooked in pure ghee, served at Allen Kitchen, a century old eatery at Girish Park. Pocket pinch INR 150/$2

Wrote this long format post on Kolkata heritage eateries: link in bio or here:https://www.orangewayfarer.com/kolkata-food-cabin-restaurants/

These century old cabins in Kolkata the famed because:
1. They welcomed women. Women in Purdah an era back. When she will stepped out of the house and make merry with family. But in a curtained plywood sectioned house out of home.
2. They hosted secret meets of the revolutionaries during Independence struggle. I kid you not. Political regimes changed over a cutlet and a cup of tea.
3. They retain the old world charm, very rare and precious, which I have found in Kolkata and loved to bits.
The food shows dominant influence of the Anglo kitchen of the days of yore. British colonial food meeting Bengali favorites and births this.
4. They were love shacks for Kolkata youth from 70s. 'prem korar jayga' as we say. A plate of chowmein witnessed a couple of young hearts sitting and dreaming hand in hand, aloof from the boisterous world.
5. Bela Bose, the song immortalised these dramatic love stories which lived short lives at Kolkata cabins.
(I didn't find any cabin at these cafes any longer. But Park Street Shiraj restaurant did have cabin back in 2008, aah 11 years...) So go read the blog and tell me what you liked... Writing of Kolkata is difficult, now that I don't stay there anymore. It makes me genuinely depressed. I avoid writing/discussing Kolkata in the blog or in person. Don't even read books (which I have bought) about Kolkata. Instead I read Humayun Ahmed, of a distant land called Dhaka because it is not as painful as thinking of Kolkata.

But I wrote the 'food blog' thinking it is immune. i was wrong. It took me some time to stay focused, not ponder on the flooding memories and finish the mammoth post.

The blog makes me happy but I feel pretty miserable for not living in Kolkata anymore. Tell me all about your coping mechanism, especially when you stay away from Hometown and are very connected to the city?
