  • #clienttipstuesdays 👏🏻👏🏻Rewarding calm behavior! Other than prong and e collars, the crate is one of the most controversial tools. YES the crate is a tool! One of the single most important tools you can use with your dog but that’s a post for another day. This one is about Mr. Chip learning that calm is what gains him freedom.
🐶
Chips crate exits were like watching a gymnast at a rodeo competition, gracefully bucking and flipping with excitement quite often to his own detriment. He’s a big dude that isn’t the easiest wrestling partner so it’s time to teach him what’s expected instead of trying to punish what he’s giving us.
🐶
What you reward will repeat and we’d like Chip to calmly exit his crate so we allow it once he’s actually calmed down a bit. Reward the calm.
🐶
We did use food sparingly towards the back of his crate since there is SO MUCH value to the front door being opened. Now he hangs back there a bit more. Food in this scenario would just be adding to his excitement.
🐶
In the early stages we waited for him to not engage with the open door. THEN we’d let him out. Now we’re working on sitting in there a little longer and his actual exit!
🐶
Notice our speaking is minimal. There’s nothing to say since he wouldn’t understand anyway. Just a calm “good boy” and an easy pet while he’s in there. We don’t ask for a “sit” or a “wait” because we care more about his mental state than his physical position.
🐶
The best part is him trying his best to be chill and flopping onto the floor vs leash biting, jumping on us or lunging to the front door. We’ll pet that all day long!!! You get what you pet!
🐶
We’re only there for a quick visit but we try to make the time we have count. It helps that he’s a quick learner😊

  • It might not be Monday morning, but it sure does feel like it, so here’s some puppy content to make it better 😍
