  • California had too many fires this year. Thankful for all the fire fighters out there risking their lives to protect the people, animals, and the forests. You guys are true heroes. A sunset when the fire was going on in the Sherman oak area. I hope this isn’t going to be a seasonal thing.

  • Did this piece a while ago ... thinking of doing a similar piece! Thoughts? Should I change up the colors? I wonder if the green is a bit too green

  • WORK IN PROGRESS: this is really hard! That’s all I can say. Just trying to maneuver around and on top of all those ridge lines and cliffs and glacier and snow and rock. Anyway...back to work.

  • Lately I’ve been seeing things clearer, all I had to do was close my eyes. Collab with @lotusjewelart for @getlostexperience - can’t wait to see how we can do it even bigger and better this year 👁✨

  • || #tbt a beautiful place I miss. Each year of the MFA, we journeyed up to Normandy in late October for a 5-day intensive painting trip. Some of my strongest works came from those painting sessions—wandering out in the dark of early morning with boots on and a heavy backpack of painting supplies, searching for motifs, setting up an easel by the light of an iPhone, and hurriedly throwing strokes on a canvas as the dawn began to break over the treetops, trying to catch the glow of light before it changed, or express the silence and calm of cold mist in the valley—all the while painting with frozen hands and a tense body and a desperate sense that all your efforts are futile, and you really don’t know how to paint, much less know anything, at all. Welcome to Giverny. Both years I learned so much as an artist, immersed out in nature, yet both years I also experienced even more intensely the loneliness and uncertainty of “being an artist”—of trying desperately to say something true, to be true, and fighting against the pressure to cave and make something you don’t believe in, and against the fear that it’s all impossible anyway, and you should just stop trying. I listened to a few beautiful, distinctive songwriters on repeat during those trips, like Boygenius, Sibyelle Baier, Agnes Obel. I’m brought back to Giverny when I listen again to them, especially to the memory of my “secret” path (see the foot bridge in the 5th photo), and the wide field with the wooden fence and distant mountainside that became my most consistent motif.
We’ll see if I ever make it back to Monet’s stomping grounds again. I do hope so. #ketchumidaho #giverny #boygenius #paintingthoughts #artfieldstudy #artmaking #paintingfromlife #paintingfromnature #marchutz #artistangst #tbthursday #artprocess #artexperience #femaleartist #artistsofinstagram #nature #frenchlandscape #landscapepainting #monet

  • Some late night painting on the next panel in the forest shadows series. It's always a bit intimidating to pull back the tape and see what everything looks like
