  • Today marks my 22nd birthday and let me tell you, it is LIT. Every year, I try to have more to show for it than the year passed. And this year, I have http://www.sugarxndspice.com to show. Ya girl is now officially a blogger! I never found a digital space I identified with so I created one. Here's where I'll come to bare my soul so if you've ever wanted to know me intimately, here's your chance. I'll talk about Mexico, dismantling the patriarchy one day at a time and micro-aggressions I deal with in my daily life. I also aim to entertain with fashion, lifestyle, food, music and Disney here and there. Most of all, I aim to tell my story so it outlives me and inspires you to write your own. #LinkInBio #HappyBirthdayToMe #BrownIsBeautiful #BrownGirlMagic

  • HAPPY WEDNESDAY! It feels like such a long week although today is really my Tuesday! I’m just so ready for the weekend already! .
.
This picture was taken about two weeks ago while exploring Sacramento, Ca. There is a place called Cantina Alley in the midtown area and it has such cute photo opps, it’s like a mini Mexico. This particular day happened to be Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) so the area was adorned with beautiful altars to commemorate the passing of loved ones. Also, there was a small pop up of Latinx vendors so it was nice to show support! This weekend, I’m going to a similar pop up shop and can’t wait! .
.
Are you ready for the weekend? What are your plans?

  • I’m very glad to announce that I was selected as part of Negocios Now "Latinos 40 Under 40" for NYC 2019. I am joining 39 other awardees in celebrating our work as Latinx leaders in NYC.

https://negociosnow.com/negocios-now-announces-its-first-ever-list-of-latinos-40-under-40-in-new-york/

This is a wonderful award that has been implemented for 4 years in Chicago and, for the first time, awarded to 40 NY’ers.

I have worked for 14 years in NYC in direct care, social work, community organizing and as a psychotherapist- work that centers community building, healing and love.
I’m amazed to be chosen for this award- as a small business owner I am often working long days and can lose sight of the larger impact of the work.
Three years ago I left a toxic work environment to build my own private practice( Amanecer Feminist Psychotherapy) with a focus on serving Queer, non-binary and trans identified individuals and families. I could not have built this practice without the GoFundMe campaign that raised the funds to help me sign a lease, and purchase office supplies to open the space. Enormous thank you to all who helped to fund the first year of scholarship for free therapy for clients as well. Your support has carried the work far!

This year has brought a lot of new opportunities and career shifting decisions. I am combining my EMDR training and training in the Trauma Conscious Yoga Method to offer more movement oriented focused therapies to support trauma processing and healing. I’ve begun to develop new course material for my work at the Columbia University School of Social Work and I’m expanding my organizational consultation work with a focus on supporting staff of color working within the non-profit industrial complex.

If you’d like to see my profile it is here:
https://negociosnow.com/promotion/amelia-ortega/

In recognition of this achievement, I will be included in the upcoming Negocios Now special digital edition. Additionally, I will be acknowledged during the Latinos: 40 Under 40 Presentation & Networking event, on Nov 12 to be held at Copacabana Times square at 6:00 pm.

  • Spent the day yesterday learning how to make #PanDeMuerto 🥖💀 with my abuelita y tía. ❤️ These are the types of memories I dream about creating with my family and hope to one day pass onto my children. 🇲🇽 Pan de Muerto is a traditional offering on the altar for deceased loved ones. This bread is only made during this time of year and the design on it represents the human bones in honor of the dead. The bread varies based on region and can be topping with sugar or seeds. #diademuertos

  • At our weekly Café con Leche event we hosted a special edition: Día de los Muertos. Attendees were presented traditional latinx foods and candies including our crowd favorite, conchas. They also relaxed, socialized with friends, and listened to our guest speaker, Erika Diaz Pascacio, speak behind the significance and meaning of Día de los Muertos. To cultivate the meaning behind this day we put on display students, friends, and figures who have passed away. Missed this event? Although we won’t have another one like it until the next Día de los Muertos, we still host Café con Leche’s every Friday evening! Come to be a part of the LLC family and meet someone new!

  • Feliz Dia De Las Brujas, Festividad de Todos los Santos and Happy Halloween! 🖤⚰️🍁🎃 👻 🍂🧹 🧡 This is my most favorite day of the year ever since I was a young child! It’s also a big day for my ancestors and family! 🇸🇻 🇲🇽 🇺🇸 Today I am dressed as the “La Chalupa” card from the Mexican card game, “Loteria”. Chalupa is a delicious (when made cruelty free) deep fried taco. It’s also a dish at Taco Bell you can easily make vegan if you sub the beef for beans and get it fresco. And it’s also Spanish for “boat”. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Loteria, it is a CLASSIC bingo type game played in Mexico and Central America. My mom played it as a kid in the old country and got it for us when we were little! She said she always hoped we’d learn Spanish (sadly I’m just semi conversational at best, but there’s still time!) as it shows basic words and people on the cards but it was always a good time! My mom is coming to Utah this weekend and says she we should play it! Trust me, this costume is worth it to those who get it! Anyways, I hope everyone has a great holiday! Be sure to eat lots of cruelty free candy and vegan chalupas! 🚣‍♂️ #Gordita #Festive #HalfLatina #Latinxpride #diadelasbrujas #veganaychingona #Latinx

  • #RepresentationMatters @voicesforkindness: "Still in disbelief that this actually happened. Growing up as a young Hispanic girl, it’s always been hard to find professional women out there who I can see myself represented by, so Justice Sotomayor has definitely always been one of my main role models and inspirations. The incredible words of advice and the amazing blessings she gave me are things I will remember forever. I almost froze when (after a very strict no pictures policy was enforced) she asked to take a picture with me, held my hands, and told me she knew I was going to do incredible things. I cried more than a little bit. What an honor." #supremecourt #justicesotomayor #sotomayor #latinxpride #hispanicheritagemonth #byttl ⚖🎓🏛

  • i love frida so much. so many female artists have been lost to history or had their skills minimized. often we hear phrases like, “[insert female artist] happened to make a really good painting...” there is often a sense that women don’t intentionally use technique etc. and that their accomplishments are accidents.

I can't describe how amazing the people I met this weekend truly are. These are only the pictures i could get, I would've taken so much more if there was any more time. This was my first NACA, def wont be my last. I tagged their instas so you all will hopefully check them out, because they're all just amazing people.
The last picture is with @carlosaglive who recognized me right away from when we took this picture almost 2 years ago. Definitely check him out, he's a very talented artist.
