  • “Many of us learn to construct a clear and precise vision of what we want, but we’re never taught how to enjoy what we actually have. There will always be more victories to strive for, more strangers to charm, more images to collect and pin to our vision boards. It’s hard to want what we have; it’s far easier to want everything in the world.” ― Heather Havrilesky, What If This Were Enough?

  • The stars are like letters that inscribe themselves at every moment in the sky. Everything in the world is full of signs. All events are coordinated. All things depend on each other. Everything breathes together.

  • ¡Hola gente!
*
Gracias obvio a @loschicosnoleen por el ejemplar.

¿Me cuentan que poesía suelen leer y recomiendan autorxs? Los leo ❤💫

  • This novel delves into some really intense emotional spaces. After the death of a husband who only caused her misery, the main character relinquishes her hold on life and gives herself up to apathy. In the midst of an affair with her aged father in law and feeling numb and careless, she falls for the gardener, tries to get a hold of him and, failing that, plots to spread her misery to him and many others as a sort of consolation.

This novel was really different than the other Japanese novels I've read, mostly because of the density of the prose. I got the impression reading this that Mishima is a master and also that this probably isn't his best novel. It felt like the work of someone who could do and has done much more.

  • Ahead of Dr Alex Barber's talk on Frankenstein on 28 March at ImagineBelfast, catch-up with Dr Sue Asbee's video on the relevance today of the social issues raised by Shelley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1QNMnaO_FE&

On 1 January 1818, the world was introduced to Victor Frankenstein and his creature by 18 year old Mary Shelley. Dr Sue Asbee, Senior Lecturer in English, explores the important social questions Frankenstein addresses and why the issues remain relevant and important today. "Frankenstein and the hyena in petticoats" (sold out, but we have a waiting list!) Thursday, March 28, 2019 - 17:00 to 18:30
The Grand Opera House, Belfast
http://www.open.ac.uk/northern-ireland/events/sold-out-frankenstein-and-hyena-petticoats

As part of the Imagine! Festival of Ideas and Politics, this event will take a fresh look at Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein. Dr Alex Barber of The Open University will consider the surprising presence of the author’s mother and father – political philosophers Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin – within the book. Using video clips during the talk, Dr Barber will uncover the influence of Shelley’s parents on this novel, particularly her feminist mother, who was called ‘a hyena in petticoats’.

Minimum age limit: 18+ This event is sold out, however we are operating a waiting list. #politics #ideas #OU50 #ImagineBelfast #grandoperahouse #philosophy #literature #frankenstein #feminism #womenshistorymonth

  • "My reasons for opposing Christianity are diferent those of the people at large. I have never thought of Christianity as an evil religion.
(...) Father, I want you to think over two things this old man has told you. One is that the persistent affection of an ugly woman is an intolerable burden for a man; the other, that a barren woman should not become a wife."

Без вас мне скучно, — я зеваю;
При вас мне грустно, — я терплю;
Вы улыбнетесь, — мне отрада;
Вы отвернетесь, — мне тоска;
