  • That’s one big boy... now 3’4” nose to tail. And still a healthy body mass thanks to his humidity-retentive tent and intense basking lights. I used to free-roam this thing and I still let him out whenever he scratches at the door, but I gotta make it clear that I don’t condone free roaming as a way to permanently house tegus! It’s great enrichment to let them run around but unless you live in a tropical environment you need a proper enclosure to maintain temps and humidity. The highest surface temperature of your basking spot should be 130 degrees Fahrenheit, Blue also has access to a 110 degree spot. Ambient temp in the tent is 85 degrees and watering the plants once a week helps humidity fluctuate in a natural way. One of these lamps holds a 150w metal halide bulb, the other holds a generic (but very hot) floodlight. Both are in heavy duty domes from Home Depot. Notice that he can easily choose to get away from the heat if he wants - you never want to trap an animal in an overheated environment. A temperature gun is a great inexpensive investment for any reptile keeper and will give you an accurate measurement of any surface you point it at.
I don’t share my expertise as often as I should so, if you want or have a tegu, hope this is helpful. It’s a big lizard and a big responsibility!

  • Your weekly Komodo dragon enrichment! Suspended food is such a great and easy way to switch things up and keep these predators in tip top shape. Unless it’s an egg in a nest, food doesn’t just wait around to be easily gobbled up in the wild. Predators have to work hard for their food and that’s part of what keeps them in that ideal “lean and mean” physique. By suspending our dragon’s food we encourage them to use all of their muscle and mind to get it. Tong feeding certainly has its pros, but mixing it up with some exercising enrichment is a necessity!

  • Fun with animals this weekend - Katy trimming Zee's nails, a praying mantis I found in the garden (which Katy promptly fell in love with, see picture 4 😍😅), and a slug laying eggs! Unfortunately, despite how cool it was to watch (and document) the miracle of life, the Arion rufus is an invasive species so they are no longer with us. Was that nice or mean that I let it finish its task before dispatching of it? 😬
