#TodayImHolding ... Gumboot Chiton armor plates! Unlike most chitons, the gumboot's interlocking plates are completely hidden by its leathery upper skin or girdle.

Bar Island | Maine
During low tide, a gravel bar is exposed connecting the town of Bar Harbor and Bar Island. Those too enamored by the seagulls and hiking on Bar Island will find themselves stranded once the tide rises. The water taxi ride to get you back to the mainland is $150 for the quarter mile boat trip.
Brown Turban snails (Chlorostoma brunnea) are a common sea snail & I kept finding them upside down. I read that they'll pick up pieces of gravel (like in pic no.2) & move the gravel around their foot until the weight acts as a counterbalance to help them to turn upright.🙃 But I righted one & it flipped itself back upside down... 🤔 It's a Gastropod mystery... Pic no.3 has two, side by side, sporting the latest algae fashions. Pic no.4 is one hanging upside down w/a Leather Star & pic no.5 is a nicely worn shell currently occupied by a hermit crab. #brownturbansnail#upsidedownworld#gastropod#algaefashion#hermitcrab#tidepooling#intertidalzone#lowtide#mendocino Turban snails eat algae & evidently, everybody (including sea stars, crabs, octopus, sea otters, birds & humans) eat Turban snails.
