In the Shiv MahaPuran a story is told of a great Devotee of Shiv. The demon named Bruk.
He performed great penance to obtain a boon from Bholenath. As a result of his penance, Mahadev became pleased and told him to ask for a boon. He asked for immortality, but Shiv said that he could not grant him immortality. Hearing this Bruk was very disappointed and was thinking what to ask.
He then decided that he wanted the following. One whose head is touched, should immediately burn up and turn into ashes (Bhasma). This was his demand. Shiv granted him the boon.
From thereone Shiv called him Bhasmasura. He was very happy and he decided to test the boon. He burned many armies of Indra. As the rakshas impure mind was extending he soon wanted to test his power on Mahadev himself. Soon he attempted to touch the head of Shiv with his forefinger. He wanted to burn Shiv and turn Him into ashes to marry Mata Parvati. Shiv fled, but he was chased by him. Wherever Mahadev went, who could not mislay him.
At last, Shiv managed to reach Shri Hari. On hearing His problem, Vishnu agreed to help him and took the form of Mohini. Mohini was so beautiful that Bhasmasur was immediately attracted by her. He requested Mohini to marry him. She replied that she was very much fond of dancing, and would marry him, only if he could match her moves in dance. He agreed and hence they started dancing.
The event went on for days, as Bhasmasura matched Mohini's move for move. While dancing, Mohini struck a pose where her hand, especially the forefinger was placed on top of her own head.
