Are we losing the art of map reading? We saw that Bradford Parkinson, who worked on GPS from the 1970s, is concerned that people are too reliant on GPS and would struggle if it stopped working. We’re keen to embrace technology and have our own apps and GPS, but we strongly advocate map reading skills too. We host National Map Reading Week and have a huge amount of material online at os.uk/nmrw to get people started in navigating safely. 📷 @riversidescouts ・・・
Last night the Cubs learnt all about maps and the things you can find on them! They even found Akela’s mum’s house!
Superb day in the Wicklow Mountains with great company.
Mountain Navigation was the aim of the game and the guys were navigating at the days end to grid line + contour intersections!!! The views were amazing....tshirts on...warm breeze and not a midge or tick in sight.

Weeny bit edited but what a pic. If you look closely at the top of the pic, you can see the lady we spoke to on Bidean Nam Bian today. We've been out walking routes for @trailmagazine this week. So far we have done 6 Munros, 4 valleys, 1 wild camp, 45km in distance, about 4,500m ascent and too many ridges to count!
Tomorrow is an easier day for me, teaching some navigation (but hopefully squeezing in another Munro!) and we will hopefully be finishing off on friday with a stonker of a day in the Mamores, visiting a few more mountains and ridges. So far so good. 😁
I've also only taken a small memory card and am using the camera on manye, to try amd force myself to be more selective with the pictures. I have space for 150 pics, to last all 5 days.
X marks the spot - they’ve made their own maps of the school and marked an X and hidden treasure, handed their map to another group and then went on a hunt to find the treasure following the map!

This year, we are combining our History and Geography lessons, instead of doing 2 separate curriculum's. .
Learning to read maps, listening to related audio recordings, sometimes an activity or craft, age appropriate student explorer worksheets, read aloud stories, and a history board game are all part of our history lessons. .
Bash is almost 3, but he likes to come play with the pawns from the game, and listen, while I read aloud, for a little bit.

Wanders in NW Leicestershire in which @cathalpaint and I established that should we get lost in the (not) wilderness, he would be the one to eat me for survival. We also established that neither of us have any sense of direction. Hmm.
