  • Rounding in this lovely white coat and heels is absolutely NOT my norm, but every once in a while it’s nice to dress up! Interview day 2 is complete, and I had a great time having my beautiful, incredible friend interview at my program. I absolutely do NOT miss interview season, but I have enjoyed getting to know lots of med students from around the country. For all of you still rocking your interviews, stay the course and push through all those sleepy flights and public bathroom changing sessions! It will be over before you know it 😍 Also if you love this white coat as much as me, check out @medelita_gram’s holiday sales going on right now!

  • Once upon a time I was learning how to intubate patients on a mannequin as a second year med student...this month I’m intubating real patients on my anesthesia elective as a general surgery resident! Never forget how far you’ve come ❤️ Something I continue to struggle with in residency is always feeling inadequate at my job and like I’ll never know enough. But then I remember how far I’ve come in less than 5 years and know that these next 5 spent learning the field of general surgery will fly by. Any of you continue to feel inadequate and like there’s hopelessly too much information to ever learn?? It gets better; I promise. 😊

  • Just your neighborhood 3rd Year Medical Student telling all you guys to get your children vaccinated 🙂🙂🙂
•
I had my first Anti-Vaxxer today.🙃 Lemme just say this. You’re doing your child way more harm than good by choosing not to vaccinate. If vaccines were these horrible things that cause autism and developmental delays wouldn’t you think there would have been a huge number of cases in our parents generation - since vaccines were pretty rudimentary back then??? And 9/10 the parent completed their vaccines as a child and they’re Gucci 🤷🏾‍♀️
•
There is absolutely no science based evidence that vaccines cause anything other than giving your child extra years to their life. There is absolutely no correlation between vaccines and autism. Not vaccinating is literally the equivalent of flushing a life saving antidote down the drain. It makes no sense. Children can die and get other debilitating medical conditions as a result of these illnesses. You don’t want to vaccinate pero you can have your children drinking high fructose corn syrup + eating processed foods + engulfed in electronics for 8hrs erryday but that’s noneee of my business 🌚☕️🐸Save yourself and the world the trouble... remember God made science. Let’s use it. Vaccinate the babies #Michelle2020

  • Tip 4/5: Probiotics!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My wife got us started on probiotics 10 years ago, long before I knew anything about them, and they have been a complete game changer for our family. When someone gets sick, it is rare that it will go through the whole family. I like to attribute this to the zone my wife enters when someone is sick. Our household regimen (along with setting up the area for the sickie in the house and constantly disinfecting) is: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔️Give everyone probiotics twice a day for the first 3 days of someone coming down with a bug. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔️If by the 3rd day nobody else has gotten sick, we feel like we are in the clear and go back to our regular usage of probiotics. (3-4x’s per week)
While this is far from a randomized control trial, I can honestly say that it has been an effective means of preventing spread at our house.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➕Probiotics are basically good bacteria that help promote and restore normal gut flora that can get significantly disrupted during a viral GI infection. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➕You can find them at pretty much any grocery store with a pharmacy area.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are also some foods that have probiotics:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️yogurt with active cultures ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️kefir ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️high quality dark chocolate ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️honey ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️sourdough bread ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️pickles ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▫️kimchi ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy probiotic-ing!

  • They ask me why…

At @pinnacleconference this weekend, I had the opportunity to reflect further on why I am on #Instagram.

Last year, I attend the @harvard women in healthcare conference with @juliesilvermd. It was a fabulous meeting & the first time I considered developing a professional profile on social media. One of things I learned there is that the only online real estate you own is your own website. So I started mine (randdiab.com).
.
I attended a session about #Twitter & learned that it’s a great place for connecting with others & finding opportunities to write or speak about medical topics. But after trying it, I couldn’t get into (perhaps bc I’m too verbose 🤭).
.
I peeked at IG & immediately hated it. The idea of having a grid full of pictures of myself made me super uncomfortable. But months later, I decided to try. I soon found a very welcoming community here & slowly felt less self-conscious about my photos & more interested in the micro-blogging.

Experiences over the past 6 mos have led me to my why. Countless young women have reached out to tell me that I’ve positively impacted their life, given them hope, inspired them to attaint their dreams. Shown them that they can look like me & be successful.
✨✨✨
I am here to show young women that - even as a minority - even as a practicing #Muslim - even in #hijab - you can connect with people of all backgrounds, be an active member of mainstream society, and achieve whatever type of success you work hard for.
✨✨✨
Yes, you may have to work harder than everyone else. No, you may not find the same opportunities for mentorship. Yes, you will face bias - explicit and implicit - ongoing #microaggressions & things that bother you but you can’t quite put your finger on why.

But if you’re willing to tough it out, hold your head up, work hard, very hard, you can surpass previous generations. You can contribute to this changing landscape & pave the way for others after you.

So today, this is why I am here. That may change with time & I’m open to it.

Does this resonate with you in any way? Tell me about it. And tell me why you are here.

  • GPA & Prerequisite courses.
.
Most programs have a minimum GPA (usually based on the last 60 credit hours of coursework) along with mandatory pre-requisite courses. After your first 60 credit hours of coursework, you probably have an idea of which faculties/courses you are more interested in, and which professors you enjoy taking classes with - taking courses that you enjoy is essential for success! Many programs strive to have diversity within the class, so for me, my Kinesiology degree helped me stand out amongst the rest. .
Tips to improve GPA:
-🔁Retake courses with low grades. The easiest way to turn a D into an A is simply to put in the work and test well.
-📝Figure out what study method works BEST for you (I’ll post more on this later).
-👫Make friends in your courses and study with them! This makes class more enjoyable, and will give you a second point of view on difficult topics. Also, it’s a lot of fun and you may build lifelong friendships (I know I did).
-🤯Show up to class. This one is HUGE. Many professors give hints and tips for the exam during lecture. Also, if your professor knows who you are, they are more likely to negotiate your grade with you (within reason).
-😴Be engaged in class. Take good notes and ask questions. It’s important to ask for clarification on ambiguous content - more often than not, others have the same question as you. -📕Apply for test accommodations if you require them. Many universities have Accessibility Services for individuals requiring accommodations. I worked for Accessibility Services as an exam invigilator for 2 years and was able to help MANY people write their tests, as a scribe, reader, or simply a proctor in a quiet space. Usually you will require a note from a doctor for this. .

  • Sadly left my home floor and work family in Ortho/Neuro one month ago but have officially accepted a position to SICU! I’d say that’s an early Happy Birthday to me 🎂

With not much left of nursing school, I can’t wait to have more opportunity to learn new skills before I graduate. Wahoo!

  • To those worried that if you go into Medicine you can’t possibly have a “normal” life, a happy family, a loving spouse or work life balance .... I’m here to tell you THAT 👏🏻ISN’T👏🏻TRUE👏🏻. Don’t let others insecurities, opinions, or false assumptions dictate your goals or what you feel called to do. I got married in medical school, celebrated every Holiday with my husband (yes sometimes that meant bringing homemade breakfast to me so we could have a picnic at work on Easter 🤣), stood by my best friends at their weddings, and am now pregnant with our first child. Will you have to make some sacrifices along the way? Absolutely. Can you make it work? Absolutely. Nothing worth having is easy. Remember that. You’ve got 1 life to live, live it to the very fullest, live it for yourself, do not live it to appease others. Thanks for coming to my TED talk . Good night! —> shout out to @wearfigs :

  • This is Australasian Students’ Surgical Association’s Vice-President Internal, @raubenhammer. Kyle is about to start his final year at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle so he can finally claim the title of ‘The Freo Doctor’. Kyle has special interests in collaborative research, trauma surgery, rural surgery, and global surgery.
•
Being born and raised in South Africa, the prospect of being able to contribute to a body of knowledge that can help those that need it most, drew Kyle to the collaborative research in the form of GlobalSurg. Since then, he has helped set up the STRIVE WA and TASMAN research collaboratives in Australia both of which have strong international links.
•
Time flies when you are having fun, and nowhere does time fly faster for Kyle then when he is in theatre. Meeting the patient and hearing the story of how their surgical problem has complicated life, followed by watching the cure happen before his eyes, and lastly seeing the patient after the procedure express how much better they feel, is the true magic of surgery to Kyle. He cannot wait to be able to ‘cut and cure’, and hopes to contribute to real evidence-based medicine to ensure this is the most appropriate therapy for the patient.
•
This is a photo of Kyle helping facilitate the laparoscopic skills station at an @ndass_ event. The incredible people Kyle has met through his involvement with surgical events and societies makes him excited about sharing a future with others who share a love for the skill of the scalpel!
