🥶Woke up to a wind chill of -7° this morning! Brrrrr. I took this photo on a morning several winters ago when the temperature was similar and we enjoyed a little sunshine and lake smoke 😊 Prints, canvases and more via link in bio or go to: www.northernwayoflife.com

I feel like all my friends are getting puppies or adding to their packs right now and it’s giving me some SERIOUS puppy fever. Patience is definitely not my strong suit but I’m confident my dream will come true someday! 🙏🏻
This photo was taken in the UP when we made the trip for a race this year. It was such magical place, their Fall was unlike anything I’d ever seen before. I already can’t wait to go back next year!

Sometimes, as a writer, I think “What could I possibly have to say that’s worthy of reading?” From the outside, I’m a white girl living in an Instagram-worthy lake house in the Midwest riviera.
This year I’ve read books like “Educated” and “Homegoing” and “The Underground Railroad” and I’ve read the news and just watched the new “In the Heights” trailer and amidst all this I am continually trying to reconcile wanting to write more creatively again with the fear (and yet also the knowledge) that the voices we need to hear from most right now might not be voices like mine. At the end of the day, you have to have a certain amount of confidence and a dash of hubris to share the things you make.
A year ago I was at the beginning of a recovery process, and I am incredibly fortunate to be supported by both friends and family. I am not a person prone to guilt, but I have felt the heaviness of this privilege every single day of the last year. It’s something I’ve worked on with my therapist. Something I’ve discussed with people I respect.
Last week, I met up with a friend whom I haven’t seen in person in six years. We discussed the nature of guilt and privilege while sitting at a high top at a gay bar somewhere in NYC with “Total Eclipse of the Heart” playing in the background.
They said something that really struck me.
“Your guilt doesn’t make anyone else more privileged.”
The best thing I can do with my privilege is use it. To bring awareness and grace and transparency to my work and my writing. To seek to understand. And you can too.
Turn around, bright eyes.
Today is the last day for our Thursday class! Join us in congratulating them on a successful 10 months. The resolve they've shown over the past 40 weeks has been inspiring and we know that they'll use that skill to thrive in the industry.
One last time, from all of the Lakewood School of Therapeutic Massage staff, congratulations!

Brandie, Clinical Therapist/Case Manager, Children's Behavioral Health Services
I’ve been here for two years. I was referred here by my academic advisor during my master’s program at Wayne State University. They suggested I apply because of my interest in children.
This program works with children aged 3 to 18 with some type of disability, whether it be a developmental disability or a cognitive impairment. Most have a history of past trauma, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse. I help empower them.
I love getting to know the kids and their personalities. I look at my job as kind of being a mentor, as well. I’m that person they can talk to and connect with who they might not have.
Things can get a overwhelming when you’re working with 60 to 70 kids, especially considering the issues they’re facing. I overcome it by practicing self-care. I take time to focus on myself so I can give these kids the best of me. I travel, hang out with friends and family, and just laugh.
I like Hope Network because it’s a smaller organization and, as a result, our staff is very close. We’re really supportive of each other.
This work can be challenging, and for some people it may be *too* challenging. But when you see these children make changes, or are impacted by something you’ve done for them, it makes it all worth it.
I’m not everyone’s photographer. Just being honest here 🤷♀️
If you’re thinking I’m going to tell you to stand just so and smile for the camera, you’re mistaken. Don’t take this the wrong way! I’ll still give you direction and talk you through what I’m thinking from behind the camera.
I’m all about movement, fun, and authentic emotion. Like this ⬆️ 😉

My favorite Ornament!! Our tree is not matching, it’s made up of ornaments we’ve collected over the years, each one telling a story. Some we picked, some handmade by the kids, some from my childhood and Corys and some given to us. I love it, it is such a good representation of us!

Shooting in the snow has been a new challenge but an exciting endeavor nonetheless. Cold hands, wet lenses, & slick surfaces. Besides these nuisances, I’m all about it. Aren’t you?
What’s your favorite environment to shoot in? What’s your number one tip for shooting in snowy conditions? #ezmoments
