• here is an exercise for you to strengthen your positivity bias: bring up the memory of eating your favorite food. try to imagine the pleasure that that food gave you. while you‘re doing this, stretch out this mental experience for as long as you can. keep that happy feeling going. you can do this exercise to strengthen any positive experience.

  • Thanks for making a difference!! Together you’ve raised $207 for the @compassionau Mum’s and babies survival project, so far this year. A minimum of $2.00 from every order goes to support vulnerable mums and babies in developing nations. You rock. 👊🏼❤️🌍

  • April is Stress Awareness Month, so I'm going to interrupt my own arbitrarily-set grid goals and write a few words about triggers.
.
A trigger is anything that prompts our brains to remember a not-so-nice experience, usually known as trauma.
.
You've likely seen the preface "Trigger Warning" or "TW" on posts. It's a friendly, neighborly gesture that gives your audience a heads up that something heavy is incoming, and it might be best to keep scrolling.
.
Just about all of us have suffered a trauma of some type—some seemingly more severe than others, but all painful to whoever experienced it—so most of us have the potential to be triggered by something.
.
Some triggers may seem minor to some and major to others. E.g., three years ago, Cody got into my Easter basket and ate about a pound of Cadbury eggs. We rushed him to the vet and prayed for the best. It all turned out OK, but I was TERRIFIED of losing him.
.
Now, each year when the Easter candy hits the shelves, I get panicky when I first see my favorite gooey, metallic-y choco treats because I'm reminded of my past experience and how crappy it was.
.
(Note that this doesn't prevent me from eating Cadburys by the bucket, but it does remind me to keep them out of Cody's reach.)
.
Also, sometimes we get triggered by something we didn't expect to trigger us, because whatever trauma we suffered has been stored deep in our subconscious and we haven't had reason (or strength) to face it. This is HARD.
.
That happened to me this last month. I went to New Mexico, eager to learn more about my genetic roots and share my findings—but then I walked into a labrynth of adopted-kid triggers that, frankly, I've struggled to cope with.
.
I uncovered wounds I didn't know I had, and the whole thing spurred me to spiral for weeks. Because of COURSE it did. This isn't the right time or vehicle to write about it, but I hope to one day. It'll just have to wait until I do some serious shadow work and talk therapy. (And finish all of this year's Cadbury eggs.)
.
So, that's a bit about triggers—and also my radio silence re: NM. I'll keep the mental health discussion active though my feel-better tips, returning soon.

  • Goals November 2018 —> November 2019

#6 be patient

One of the hardest things is to be patient. I always like to know what comes next and I like to plan as much as I can.

So for me being patient meant to stop planning ahead and create time for spontaneous ideas and adventures. Especially these few weeks on the east coast trip, I tried to plan as less as possible. I did exactly what I felt like doing which made it way more fun, interesting and relaxing.

  • When our first son was born, my crazy Serbian family invited the whole village to their house to celebrate the birth of their first grandchild; they partied until the following morning. Rumour has it that my dad could only crawl the following day! 😂🍾
When my family met my baby, they were so in love, they kissed him, carried him and hugged him pretty much all the time we were there. My dad, who was a very strict father when we were growing up, was the biggest softie with his grandson. He absolutely melted over him.
But this made me think of Rhys’ father, whom he hadn’t seen for 26 years. I felt incredibly sad that he didn’t even know that he was a grandfather. So I started searching for him. I sent out so many emails and nothing came back, until this one day when I received this HUGE email back.
It was from Rhys’ father.
A couple of years later, we met him for the first time. It hasn’t been easy, too much time had passed. But one wonderful thing was born out of this; we met Rhys’ cousin Laura & her family. We didn’t even know she existed.
Her mum and dad are just the nicest people, who took Rhys and I, and our boys, in like their children. Rhys’ cousin and her family have become our only UK family.
We all get on SO well.
I love Laura so, so much; she is my UK sister and one of my best friends ever. We laugh & cry together. We have very similar values. She’s achieved things in her life that we can only dream of; all because she is so bloody clever, works incredibly hard and because she has bigger balls than most men! She’s such an inspiration to me!
My husband gets on really well with her husband too; he’s a wonderful, kind, kind, hardworking man who loves his family so much.
Our babies are proper cousins! They get on so well. I love the fact that when ever we get together, our babies make memories.
I am so glad I sent those emails out 12 years ago. Love wholeheartedly; life is too short not to. ♥️
