  • (AD) What I like most about drinking coffee, I think, is the ritual. Not saying I don't enjoy drinking it (I've been known to neck four or five strong'uns on a deadline day). But I really love that a cup of coffee means taking a break, getting away from the gadgets, and having a little read or doing nothing much at all. For me, a big part of this ritual is the making of the coffee. First thing on a morning – the steam, the coffee smell, burning my tongue because I can never wait for it to cool down – it's what I do to wake up. So I'm a bit mesmerised by the way my new @nespresso machine works: it comes out creamy, goes cloudy, then slowly separates – black coffee with a frothy head. (Have a look at my Stories. Proper hypnotic, isn't it? Nah? Just me. Please yourselves.) I'll be working with Nespresso for the next year – doing all sorts of cool stuff – so, long story short, get out the way, George lad! Carolyn's taking care of business now!!! #NespressoTastemakers

  • These little roses, they have faded but I still have a few more photos of them. I am just feeling this color today.

⠀
Люблю.

⁣
Today on the BLOG, I'm talking about my best travel tips. From how to pack efficiently, how to deal with jet lag and I've also made a list of some pretty spectacular restaurants in cities that I love.⁣
Check the link in bio for a read!⁣

  • happy Monday! How was your weekend?

This weekend was Pokémon go community day and I finally reached level 38!! I caught 3 shiny mudkip and a Shiny Swablu on Friday 😍 It’s been brutally hot here on the east coast. Highs were in the 100s here in DC, and I’m really missing the temperate weather from the spring 😩 I literally walked from the parking lot to a building and I was already sweating! I’m really looking forward to cooler temperatures later this week, and hopefully I’ll have more energy too. Everyone in the office is complaining that it doesn’t feel like a Monday — it feels like we’ve already survived a few days of work! This morning was pretty hectic 😩 just a few more patients + one liposuction procedure in the afternoon! 📍le bread lab, Shanghai, China

  • Long time, no sea 🌊 We’ve made it to Charleston, are absolutely in love, insanely busy, and have been a little MIA in the meantime. I have so many exciting things to record and share. Until then, here’s a picture of the cutest little food grabber’s hand at my birthday brunch 🌟

  • • Stumbled upon this poem not realizing it was a mirror—
.
“How I go to the woods” by Mary Oliver

Ordinarily, I go to the woods alone, with not a single
friend, for they are all smilers and talkers and therefore
unsuitable.

I don’t really want to be witnessed talking to the catbirds
or hugging the old black oak tree. I have my way of
praying, as you no doubt have yours.
Besides, when I am alone I can become invisible. I can sit
on the top of a dune as motionless as an uprise of weeds,
until the foxes run by unconcerned. I can hear the almost
unhearable sound of the roses singing.

If you have ever gone to the woods with me, I must love
you very much.

  • Some children are weaned on a surfboard, but I was weaned on an airplane.

By the time I was seven years old, I had made four transatlantic roundtrips between California and Europe, and it didn’t stop there. By the time I was ten, I had moved nine times. And by the time I was twenty, I had been in one general area for far too long in my book (ten years). I needed to mix it up, shake up the routine that had burnt me out, and seek the thrill of chasing the unknown.

Discomfort, in a way, is my comfort.

But as growing as travel can be, it won’t leave you fulfilled if there’s something already missing from your life. Traveling will not cover up a desire for community and longing to be seen.

Not gonna lie, the idea of putting down roots in a community gives me anxiety as I type the very words. It’s something I have hardly known. I was not the kid who grew up with Sally next door since we were both two days old, went to the same high school as my entire kindergarten class, and returned to a hometown after going to college.

I actually don’t know what to say when people ask me where I’m from. My response is, “Do you want the town on my birth certificate, the place I spent the first few years of my life, the area I’ve lived the longest, or the region that feels like home to me now?” But that is no excuse for me to run away from genuine community.

Regardless of where your upbringing fell on the “nomad -> planted” scale, community (as opposed to hundreds of scattered friends across the world) is absolutely essential. @johnmarkcomer puts it as “connectedness” (social media friends you rarely get to see) vs “community” (a group of people who know your day to day and create a space for you to become vulnerable). The kind of community where, as my friend @steph.martinez puts it, you know what time each other wakes up and where you keep your toothbrushes.

Please, travel the heck out of your life. I am so thankful my upbringing afforded it to me. But if you are feeling unfulfilled and going about life in a connected vs communal fashion, travel is not going to cover that up. Seek discomfort. Seek community where you can be seen and loved regardless of your flaws.

It brings back memories, bright and crisp, of a morning spent writing postcards home, people-watching and sipping the perfect iced coffee. #austintx #keepaustinweird #visitaustintx
