Designed by James O’Donnell, not only an American but a Protestant (who ended up converting to Catholicism), Montreal’s Basilique Notre-Dame was built in 1829 and was the first Gothic-revival-style church in Canada. As if the glowing interior isn’t dramatic enough, a phenomenal 45-minute sound-and-light show called Aura dances around the interior 6 days a week.
