Shorty Long: Aqui Viene El Juez (Here Comes The Judge) / Canta Lo Que Quieras (Sing What You Wanna)
In the coming weeks we will feature Spanish Motown singles.
The first one is Shorty Long’s “Here Comes the Judge”. It was written by Shorty himself, with Billie Jean Brown and Suzanne dePasse. Brown was famous and feared as head of Motown’s Quality Department: many times she sent producers back to the studio to improve their product. She is lesser know for her writing and producing. DePasse’s biggest project was to make a new Motown group ready for stardom: the Jackson 5. But earlier, in 1968, she co-wrote “Here Comes The Judge”. “Here Comes The Judge” was to be Shorty Long’s only big hit. It went to BillBoard’s Top 10 and Top 30 in the UK and the Netherlands. Shorty Long’s songs were always funky.
Unfortunately his career and his life was short: at age 29 he drowned in a boating accident. He was one of the first Motown artists to be allowed to produce his own songs.
The US single was released May 7, 1968 on the Soul label: 35044, Spain: Tamla Motown M-5034.
