Shoulder and scapular movement are key in any type of upper body exercise. Making sure they are moving properly will help decrease the chance of impingement, rotator cuff issues, and other injuries in and around the area.
Here are a few tips to get the area moving.👇🏼
1️⃣ Banded shoulder distraction. Adding a bit of tension on the resistance band, relaxing the shoulder, and moving it into internal and external rotation.
2️⃣ Scapular retraction exercise. You can begin this exercise without using weight and letting your arm hang down, then adding some weight to tolerance. Without rotating the shoulder forwards, you want to retract and squeeze the shoulder blade back. This will get the scapular moving in protraction (forwards as the weight pulls the arm down) and retraction (backwards as you pull the weight up).

Gua Sha translates a little like, 'skin scrape', and with some natural oil that's exactly what you do.
By rubbing these tools rhythmically over the skin you build up the 'Sha' which is the redness on the skin. You're breaking tiny blood vessels to encourage local healing in order to expel pathogens, break up Blood stasis and help with local Qi circulation. A bit like a deep tissue massage.
There is a special technique to use (and I've seen A LOT of poor ones with people trying to do cosmetic Gua Sha which seems like a bit of a trend at the moment on Insta). I'll do a vid soon.
