This #ThrowbackThursday post reminds us that some things never change. Here is an article from 1953 reminding Canadians to come together, get outside and plant some tulip bulbs! Well before the internet, if Canadians had questions, they were directed to ‘horticultural societies, seed dealers and the provincial and federal departments of agriculture’. Ok, maybe things have changed a little bit after all! 🌷

Manitoba Maple is often considered a weak and brittle cousin to the likes of sugar maple, which is true to a degree. A young healthy specimen isn't always as bad as you might think though! Look at the way these fibers reacted! More brittle wood would snap readily, whereas this pulled out some very long strands.
A likely factor is that this tree had grown with a significant lean to the south, requiring stronger wood to support it. Manitoba Maple is highly phototropic, meaning it reacts and grows towards the light more strongly than most other species.
