  • “Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.” - @NeilDegrasseTyson

  • On July 16, 1969, the crew of Apollo 11 launched toward the Moon on a historic and groundbreaking voyage. From that moment, our understanding of our Earth, its nearest neighbor, and its place in the universe changed forever. Happy Apollo 50th Anniversary! 🚀🎉 #apollo #apollo11 #apollo50 #space #moon #nasa

  • I’ve been checking out everyone’s posts today about the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Saturn V space vehicle’s launch into space which on July 16, 1969. Some people we alive to see it in person. Some watched the broadcast. Others, like myself, learned about it in school and memorized that famous quote about mankind’s progress.

Several days later, the first manned exploration occurred. Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edward E, “Buzz” Aldrin explored the surface of the moon for 2 hours and 15 minutes while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit inside the command module. They returned to earth with 46 pounds of lunar samples.

I’ve always been interested in space and, had I been alive at the time, I most certainly would have been glued to the TV like everyone else, watching as each step was taken.

These are a few memorable shots from my trip to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. It includes one of the space suits worn by Buzz Aldrin. I’ve also been to the Kennedy Space Center, the site of the Apollo 11 lift off. It’s an unbelievable feeling being that close to the shuttles, rockets, modules, suits, and other things that touched down on a place most of us have never been. I’ll probably go digging for those photos too one day.

Here’s to small steps...and the great men & women that take them so the rest us can move in leaps & bounds. 🚀✨

  • We’re sharing two more books today that celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.
.
This newly expanded edition of Moonshot has eight additional pages with more information about the Apollo 11 flight and Moon landing. It’s an incredibly detailed account written from perspectives of space and home, with exquisite and wondrous illustrations. It’s really a book for readers of all ages. Moonshot was written and illustrated by Brian Floca (@brian_floca) and published by Richard Jackson Books/Atheneum Books for Young Readers (@simonkids).
.
As a young boy builds his own rocket and prepares to launch it in his backyard, he follows along on the astronauts’ journey on the Saturn V and eventual landing on the Moon in Apollo 11. Scientific concepts are naturally presented to the reader in this engaging blend of fiction and nonfiction. Go for the Moon: A Rocket, A Boy and the First Moon Landing was written and illustrated by Chris Gall and published by Roaring Brook Press (@macmillankidsbooks).

  • Thank you so much @ofrick for doing this with me today!
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo 11 mission that, just a few days later, would bring the very first humans to the moon.
For me, there's something inherently hopeful about space exploration. Nevermind the politics that surrounded the birth of early space programs. The Cold War was nothing but a dick waving contest, except that if either side had wiggled too hard, they could have destroyed us all. Seriously, #yourebothlosers

But the idea behind it all. The search for knowledge for its own sake, the drive to understand more about the universe and our place in it, is both humbling and awe-inspiring. Like explorers in earlier eras, or, at least, in the way that we've mythologized them in our storytelling, it's the journey of discovery itself that is the entire point. To know what there is to be known. I think in its purest form, scientific exploration and discovery exemplifies the best of what humanity can be.
This universe that we live in is too vast, too beautiful, too unknown, for us to continue to kill ourselves through war and violence and inequality and environmental degradation. We have to do better.
We have to boldly go.

  • 50 Years ago today Mankind with these United States set off on a journey to put a man on the moon. We succeeded. My Dad supported these efforts with Motorola and the GED Group. He had prints of the Apollo 11 mission and it left an indelible mark on my future taking me to dream and live for aviation to this day... Thanks Pops for supporting my dreams and being an inspiration... and I am so proud to be part of the American Aviation community and look forward to our return amongst the explorers and stars! How fitting this evening I went out to look and marvel at the full-ish moon and low and behold the ISS went streaking across the sky! I took a screenshot of it through my Sky Guide App... so cool! .

  • It’s been a year since I was lucky enough to take a trip aboard the NASA SOFIA to the stratosphere, so I’ve particularly enjoyed the images posted from Ian Griffin’s @otagomuseum @portobellopictures trip over the last few days.
This is a repost of a really spectacular Aurora Australis. Wonderful to hear too that a group of Kiwi schoolteachers got to enjoy a trip this year to inspire our next generation of stargazers and Aurora hunters. Ka pai.🌎✨🌏 #matariki #aurora #auroraaustralis #nasa
