  • I first came across the phrase "Recycle Yourself" at the time when I was in the middle of reading 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' - it's a phrase that has never left me. To me, it means making yourself in death into something new and useful for life. To me, personally, that means organ donation and/or an eco-friendly disposition. To others, that could be being on a body farm, or becoming plastinated to become and educational tool for others. What does it mean to you?

  • Often we fail to realize that one of the most unnatural things we have blindly accepted is the way we preserve the dead.
Embalming caught on back when Abe Lincoln died, they embalmed his body to preserve it as they transported his body across the US in a train for people to pay homage to his life until it came to it’s resting place.
Since then the burial industry has boomed, creating an over $20billion dollar industry in the US.
The average burial costs over $10 thousand dollars and accounts for the use of a lot of resources, all for preserving a body that in my view, ought to be returning back to nature.
I’ve made as much peace as possible with the idea of my future return to the earth & have decided that I am going to opt for a natural burial.
No embalming fluids. Don’t pump my body full of preservatives and chemicals. Don’t put clown makeup on me and don’t pose me like a mummy. Don’t cremate me.
Just strip my body bare, wrap me in hemp or some natural tarp, bury me as is, plant a tree over top of me either on my own property or in a natural burial cemetery. Have a celebration of life ceremony and carry my lessons, stories, & love with you after I go.
Anyone else ever look into a natural burial, or didn’t even have any clue they existed?

  • A recent photo from Reddit posted by someone who found this raccoon skull while weeding a vineyard. Such a beautiful representation of where we all come from and where we all will eventually go. This reminds me of an alternative funerary practice that is gaining momentum abroad where a body or cremains are buried beneath a sapling so the remains can help nourish a tree. Another variation involves freezing the body and pulverizing it into compost for a memorial tree. If only these practices would gain more popularity and become readily available in the United States. A tree could serve as your tombstone and graveyards could become protected forests for wildlife instead of wasting hundreds of square miles on herbicide-dependent lawns to warehouse toxic embalmed corpses. Old [religious] habits die hard. Baby steps (If you are a skull collector and do your own bone cleaning like I do, you may agree the most extraordinary part about this photo is the fact that all of the teeth are still in their sockets! LOL) Photo credit: Reddit user Zuelk. #CircleOfLife #BeautyInDeath #AshesToAshes #ArtByNature

  • Yesterday, Mimi's girls picked out her final resting place. A beautiful shady spot near a tree. When we arrived there were cows resting nearby, yellow butterflies, two horses came to say hi, even a little pony! A perfect peaceful home for Mimi with good company. It's the first time these three sisters have been together in a couple years. Honestly, we haven't spent that much time all together in our lives. We each have different dads, so when our mom died, we went to different homes. I was 8 years old, Kaeleigh was 5, Brandee was 5 months. Mimi did everything she could to keep us together growing up, but it was challenging to navigate. Although we were not always close, we were always reminded to love each other. Mimi didn't have any siblings, so she worked hard to help us see the blessing of having each other. I hope somewhere she is smiling, seeing her girls so happy to be together, honoring their Mimi. Friends & family are invited to join us 10am tomorrow, Friday June 21st at Countryside Memorial Park, 499 Cemetery Lane, in La Vernia, Texas. Thank you kind friends who have donated to the GoFundMe & in person! We only need $500 to pay everything in full tomorrow. (Link in bio.) Anything helps. Thank you 💚 #mimisgirls #mimilove #loveyourgrandmother #debbiesdaughters #wombsisters #sisterlove #naturalburial #returntoearth

  • The Sainfoin (Onobrychis) flower is one of the more beautiful seen in the meadows at the moment with its long flowering head in an eye catching pink 🌸
.
This flower is a favourite of many animals being pollinated by Bees and one of the favourite grazing plants of cattle and sheep. Roughly translated Sainfoin mean ‘good hay’ as it has many benefits for grazing livestock. So when this is bailed up at the end of Summer it will be enjoyed by Eddie and his pals back at his home 🐝🐑🐄 🐴

  • About a year & a half ago we were contacted by this family who had read an article about our organization. Mrs. Pascarella's last wish was to have a green burial. Because there are very limited options in CT the family opted for a home burial. After so much hard work from her family & the funeral home getting all the approvals, & as much support & effort as we could give, she has finally been laid to rest.
Story on @nbcconnecticut - "Green burials are legal in Connecticut and all 50 states, but there can often be restrictions at the local level concerning where, exactly, these burials can take place. 'Connecticut Green Burial Grounds is here to change that, to give everyone in the state the option of natural burial ground in a beautiful setting,'said Elizabeth Foley, who is the founder of an organization trying to establish cemeteries specifically for green burials."

  • Do you or someone you know have questions about the end of life? "What do you want your end of life experience to look like?" The majority of us will live well into old age and are more likely to die from a protracted illness than an accident. Accepting this reality means death, like birth, becomes something to prepare for.

Would you choose to enter fully into your end of life experience? Would you like to be as engaged and well-informed about your death as you have been for other experiences in life? Dying is a singular event and it is possible to orchestrate a hand-crafted experience. But, how?

Meet Nancy Ward, she is the founder of Sacred Endings providing End of Life Services. Supporting and empowering the dying and their families to create a meaningful transition.

  • Mimi had quite the green thumb. She taught us to stop and smell the roses. She loved roses. We had great times going to the Antique Rose Emporium. The knockout roses we planted when she lived here with us are taller than me now ... Some good news about natural burial! I met with the funeral director today. Some costs originally quoted are optional. One may choose to invest in a burial shroud or wicker basket. Or, one may dress and wrap their loved one more simply in natural fiber blankets or fabric, with herbs and flowers, in a lovingly handpainted biodegradable box. At our current cost estimate and including funds raised (thank you!) I'm estimating we still need about $2000 by Friday. Anything helps. Link in bio. 💚🌹🦋 #nancyfern #restinpeacemimi #stopandsmelltheroses #loveyourgrandmother #loveyourelders #naturalburial #returntoearth

  • So I’ve decided that we’re going to start a new tradition at Penlow....... We’re going to refer to the special Mother’s and Father’s Day as Ladie’s & Gentlemen’s Day because I believe that not everyone gets that chance or maybe don’t want it, but they all still deserve a mention 💙❤️

  • On Fathers Day I want to share with you the flowers that I made for my own Dad’s funeral a couple of weeks ago. I never thought I would be making these, not for many many more years. It’s such a terribly sad time for anyone when you lose someone you love, but these flowers briefly put a smile back on the faces of all our family. The power of flowers. I actually enjoy creating farewell flowers for this reason. They are often very personal, including favourite blooms and ones that hold special memories. These, for my Dad, are fitting for his natural burial and included flowers out of 3 different gardens too. I rearranged the flowers the next day to remove the foam and create vases full for the whole family. .

  • Last Friday one of our goats, Annie, fell down a steep slope. She did not survive the fall. Through my sobs I got on the bus from NYC to Philly, hoping to make it back in time to help bury her. I wouldn’t make it back in time. An amazing group of community members, staff, and volunteers rushed to help prepare her body for burial as I sat on the crowded bus. After a few minutes I got a call; Annie’s body had become stiff and would not fit in the grave they had prepared. I turned my attention to the task at hand and began coaching them on how to massage her limbs and hasten the effects of rigor mortis. I felt confident, knowledgeable, and useful! Folks took turns while I explained and answered questions. Getting the chance to participate in Annie’s care made my physical absence bearable, and allowed me to begin the difficult work of grief. Annie was a beautiful soul who delighted in sharing her love. She would fall asleep in your lap...and snore! You could almost guarantee that she would make the strongest connection with the most vulnerable person in a group. The pain of her death is coupled with the warm memories she managed to impart on everyone she met, even in her final moments. #greenburial #animaldeath #rigormortis #naturalburial #grief #mortician #death

  • Choosing a Green cemetery can help cut back the cost of burial. Green cemetery’s do not allow embalming fluid. They require biodegradable caskets ( like the one pictured here from naturalburialcompany.com) or shrouds only, and do not require you to purchase a vault to place the casket inside, as most non-green burial sites.
This saves SO much money!

The “vault” most people are not aware of is COMPLETELY unnecessary! It actually make it harder for your body to decay as it is meant to.
This video is a clip from “Dying Green” a documentary I found on Amazon Prime.
I wanted to show how even just a simple shroud can make for a beautiful and respectable burial.

  • We encountered this beauty yesterday on trail at Larkspur ( @naturalburial ) I noticed it about 2 feet away. Luckily our friend and wildlife photographer Mary Glynn ( @mgw_pics ) had her telephoto lens and could capture these photos. Timber Rattlesnakes are protected by the State of Tennessee and like all native species on our land further protected by @nature_org Let this be a lesson to all. Watch where you step. If you encounter a snake of any kind keep your distance and leave them be. They are likely just as frightened of you as you are of them. ✌️ #timberrattlesnake #naturalburial #larkspurconservation
